I have that suspicion as well, but the sooty birds I came across (race birds from janseens line) usually have a more even spread of the darker patches...
I was thinking it could be sooty ash red checker. I would think the dirty gene wold give it a stained (black marks) beak. I have dirty blue bar rollers and they just have darker blue bodies and very clean black bars.
