Hi folks! First time quail mom here. I started off with 5 pharaoh chicks that I hatched from storebought eggs a few months ago. A while later, I bought some more from people on craigslist because those original 5 grew into 3 males and 2 females. I now have pharaohs, whites, one fawn, and one that I'm not too sure about. The one I'm talking about is in the left corner. Sorry for the bad pic, we all know how hard it is to get a clear shot of a quail 😅 For comparison, the other two are my normal pharaohs.

In person, she has the same markings as the pharaoh, but tan and cream instead of the normal brown tones. As a chick, she was yellow with pale brown stripes. She also looks very similar to my fawn, but the fawn is more reddish while this one is more tan.

Speaking of my fawn, she flew away the other day (there's a happy ending, I promise!). We raised chickens when I was a kid, so when people said quails could fly, I assumed they meant "fly like a chicken." 😰 Well, a couple days ago I went out to change their water. I propped open the top of their pen and my fawn hen just flew out just like a pigeon! I watched her arc over the cinderblock wall into the neighbor's yard. A nice lady lives there, but I don't know her know her, you know? I live in one of those suburban neighborhoods where neighbors like to keep to themselves. She also wasn't home, because I rang the doorbell like five times. When I peeked over the wall, there was a BBQ grill with a cover on it, and on top of that cover was a single fawn-colored quail feather. So I decided to just sneak into her backyard and grab my bird. When I did, I found her hiding under the bbq grill 🙃 Moral of the story...QUAILS CAN FLY. And now I know!

Sounds like she's probably a Roux Pharaoh! I think it's also called Egyptian, it's a diluted version of Pharaoh :D

Thank you! It's my first time hearing about the roux coloring. I googled it and I see some birds that look a lot like my mystery bird! But I also see a lot that look like the fawn quail. Also, some websites seem to use roux and fawn interchangeably. Is it the same thing?

Coturnix colors, names, and genetics are a little messy than say pigeon, horse or dogs, plus there's not many people who keep the more 'rare' colors to test genetics. From what I understand fawn is either another name for it or it's a Tibetan/Rosetta with the Roux dilute gene, wether or not it's a fawn I do think it's an Egyptian :D when I get in a position where I'm able I'd love to get my hands on some of the silver genetics to play with, talk about confusing! Haha :D

I also found out the hard way just how far they could fly. I lost two king quails because they flew away. Unfortunately I didn't get them back though :(

I totally get what you mean about neighbours keeping to themselves! I also live in a suburban neighbourhood where I don't really know my neighbours. They have been nice enough to return one of my chickens a few times though

There is really much confusion in the naming.

Just an example... in the US fawn/egyptian it a kinda diluted, slightly redish Wildpattern.

As the gene table from Cheng and Kimura as of 1990, the "fawn" gene is Manchurian homozygotious /Italian heterozygotous.

You see, perfect confusing 🤪

Edit: Here in Germany we call the fawn gene "Gold" ... And Italians "Gold Speckled"

Wow, those are some nice neighbors!

%^&*&%$#$ I'm going to go cross-eyed from all this info! 😂 I had no idea quails could be so...interesting.

I am still trying to figure out the genetics for Coturnix... very interessting is my resent breeding batch experiment ...

https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/➡-quail-hatch-along.1276785/post-22946606

It teached me the following:
A. my Silver Roo has the sexlinked roux gene hidden
B. He also seems to have a partial albino factor
C. Silver and Tibetan results in Carocal
D. the dilution factor of my Roux Dilute hens is unpredictable 🤔

So interessting 🤓
