What color is this frizzle? And what color should I breed her to?

Here are some pics of my newest addition...a frizzle hen. She's just the absolute cutest girl!

But is she considered red? The underlay color of her feathers is blue, while the ends of her feathers are red. Some pics I've seen of other red frizzles shows a light brown/beige underlay color. Her shades of the 2 colors resembles a blue laced red variety, but that color doesn't exist in cochins, does it? And what would be the best color of roo to breed her to in order to possibly get some chicks with her color pattern?

i'm no 'specialist' in any way here, but it doesn't appear to be just red.

when we looked at her feathers in person, they sure had blue on them.

she is a beauty!

I have a red frizzle. This one is deffinately differant.

I bred a few of my frizzles this last year and got some crazy colors also. I need to get some pics of them... Sorry I can't be much help...

I hope you find out, and I'll be watching this thread.

If I were you, I would breed her to a straight red roo. Or a straight blue... Maybe the blue will bring out the color more and give you a beautiful bird.

rjv, I've been thinking about a blue cochin roo. But the red ones are so pretty, too.

I could also start a sizzle project. I've got a white silkie roo (heard him crowing) and a grey silkie roo (I'm guessing it's a roo).

If red frizzles have a reddish under color, then they are wheaten. Since your bird is not wheaten( no reddish under color), I would say she is wild type or brown. Wild type and brown have a gray under color in their feathers. These two alleles also tend to allow more black pigment to show in the hackles and on the back. In your case the color is blue due to the blue gene.

If your bird is purebred or homozygous for wild type or brown, mate the bird with a red male ( with reddish undercolor and is wheaten). Your bird appears to be homozygous for the recessive frizzle modifying gene and only carries one dominant frizzle gene. You should get some frizzled and non frizzled birds but the under color will be reddish. Wheaten is not always dominant over wild type or brown so you may get bids that have mixed under color.

Then take a male (non frizzled) from the offspring and back cross to the original female. You should get what you want from the backcross. You will also get birds with standard feathers.

You could cross frizzled to frizzled but some of the offspring will have narrower feathers and be of poorer feather quality.
