Hey everyone, I’m new to the group but not new to chickens. I have recently got into showgirl silkies and have breed three gorgeous roosters. 2 of which are a blue splash colour and one paint. I will attach images of the blue fellas. Just wondering what colour they actually are and are they standard colouring.

Hey there! Welcome to the group! It’s great to hear you’re getting into showgirl silkies and breeding some beautiful roosters.

From your description, it sounds like the two blue splash roosters you have are likely a mix of blue and splash genetics. In silkies, the blue color can manifest in different shades, and the splash is usually characterized by a white base with blue splashes throughout.

As for whether they’re standard coloring, it depends on the breed standards set by the poultry association you’re following. Generally, blue and splash are recognized colors in silkies, but check the specific standards for showgirl silkies to see how they align.
they could be classified as "blue" or "blue splash." In silkies, the blue color can often present as a range of grey shades, with darker heads and lighter bodies being quite common.
  • Both blue and splash are recognized colors in silkies, so your roosters likely fit within the standard color variations. The specific shades can vary, but as long as they exhibit the characteristics of blue and splash, they should be acceptable for show.
If you're planning to show them, it might be a good idea to check the specific breed standard for showgirl silkies in your area, as there can be slight variations in standards depending on the organization.

Overall, it sounds like you have some lovely birds! If you have any more questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Your boys both look blue to me. I'm attaching a copy of how the BBS gene works when breeding, images from google. Calling them "blue splash" is a misnomer and confusing... Splash birds have 2 copies of the blue diluter gene and don't get the dark heads. Blue birds have one copy of the blue diluter gene, according to my current understanding. It's true that blue comes in varying shades.

Paint is dominant white over black and *can* look similar to splash. The difference being that in paint the entire feather will be black (or blue if bred that way) and in splash the splashed feathers *may* not be that color all the way to the base but only a portion thereof. Paint by its nature *may* also create holes in the skin pigment.

From what I can make out in that pic, they appear to be fairly standard for blue in color.
