all 5 of my hens have something like this on their combs. My eggs have slacked off to about 2 a day as well. Is this something serious?
If you can't tell I'm talking about the dark spot and the ashy "bloom" on the comb & wattle.
Thanks!
Thats how mine look as well but no change in egg production. I was told I have mites. Do your girls look like they are itchin all the time? Balding at all? pecking bugs out of the new stuff(hay or shavings) you put in the coop? these were all signs of mites for me.
How cold has it been? The dark spot could be frost bite, or they could have had a little fight and injured each others combs. My OEGB roo's always look like this b/c they fight constantly.
Could be frost bite. The days are getting shorter which will slow egg production. frost bite normaly shows at the tips of combs and wattles and works its way inward. being in texas i wouldn't imagine you would have frost bite trouble though.
I can almost guarantee that it's NOT frostbite...It looks like a bug bite or a scratch...As for getting the "bloom" on the comb and wattles, I think it's because it's getting dry. Try rubbing them with Vaseline or BagBalm.
