What day to do the Egg-topsy (autopsy)?

Last hatch 1 of my 3 did not hatch and I opened probably about day 24. Not quite sure what happened to the little fella but he was fully formed so I was estimating he expired around day 18 - which was the last day I candled.

Five were scrambled/clear
One was a slightly formed quitter (maybe 7 - 10 days)

Two have embryos but are not moving nor have they pipped. I taped the hole closed and put them back in. Doubt they are still viable, but I'll give them another day.

Sorry to hear they were all not good. I also had a bad hatch this week. Recieved 18 silkie eggs in mail double boxed. Still had 9 broke, I am starting to thank the mail man is doing it on purpose. 4 never developed so I was down to 5, they started rocking on Fri. night, then nothing. I openned them Sun. 2 looked like they never pipped membrane just died, 1 pipped bottom think it drowned, 1 pipped membrane but died, 1 was alive so I helped it out and is doing fine. Well doing fine if you can stand its nonstop peeping because its alone.

Awwww, I'm sorry about your bad hatch, too.

That one little guy in your batch must have been tough to make it through such rough treatment.

Are you trying again soon or waiting for Spring?

Well A fellow BYCer sent me a few eggs (silkie) to try for her to test fertility. They are due to hatch in a week. 6 are doing great, 2 were broke. I have 20 chicks between 1-2 weeks old in my guest room. So this will be it for me til spring. (saying that while knowing if a set of eggs gets listed that I really want I will probably buy more). Are you going to set more or wait? I just kinda like the idea of them being closer to laying in the spring if they hatch now, plus its something fun to do when its cold outside.

I am going to set a batch of mixed Marans and BBS Orps for my last try.

I have some ideas about improving my hatch rates that I want to try, and having an experiment to do for the next snowy month will be a good thing.

Hopefully I will have some chicks to keep me cheery through January.

Winter is just tooo long!
