What did I get myself in to!!!!!

Today I picked up two turkey chicks from the auction for $7 each. This is my vary first time having turkeys so I have no idea what I'm doing... Got them home and it seems there sick!! One sounds like it has a runny nose and it's eye foamed up.. What can I do for it? There in the house and I gave them chick starter. I have game bird feed should i give them that insted of chick starter? Also I don't know what kind they are or how old? Any ideas? If they do make it can I keep them with my chickens and peacocks ones there older?

I can only tell you what I would do, if someone brought me a couple of poults with foamy eye and respiratory problems. I'd cull immediately and disinfect everything (wouldn't go near my turkeys/chickens until I'd washed clothes and showered).

First thing I'd suspect (most common): http://www.merckmanuals.com/vet/pou...lasma_gallisepticum_infection_in_poultry.html

It might be something else (if you have a vet where you can have them tested to rule out M. S./G/M. then great (leave them at the vet's until testing is done).

Maybe another member has a better idea.

You can treat (as listed in link - don't know if you can get Tylosin OTC in your neck of the woods) but that won't completely eliminate the threat.

Gamebird Starter and, if you have any of the antibiotics listed in link, start them on it now. If you keep them use strict biosecurity when working with your chickens and peacocks.

Bre~ I'm a first time turkey raiser too!! There are some great people that know a lot about them here, I'm sure they'll be around shortly to help hang in there. Do you know how old they are?

Ok thank you ill get some antibiotics tomorrow. I guess I should have just left them for someone els to buy.... no I don't know how old they are.

today one of them is much worse, its eyes are stuck shut. but the other seems absolutely fine, when i put my hand in the cage it freaks out and throws itself at the sides of the cage. the sick one just sits there. I'm going know to see if i can get some antibiotics for them.

Honestly, I have NO experience with this situation. But please take extra caution for all your flock. Keep us updated.

I am not fan of culling because I will exhaust all avenues in treating a sick bird (rarely happens to me) but I have to agree with ivan3. Because you bought this problem from someone else, you have no idea what you are dealing with. I would cull IMMEDIATELY. You are taking a HUGE risk in keeping these birds. If they somehow infect the rest of your birds (if you have any), you will have a monster on your hand that you can't tame. :/

Update yesterday I went to get some antibiotics but they were closed so I'm going back today. The one is looking really bed today and I don't really want to handle it to much because I don't want to infict my other birds. Is there a chains it's just a cold or something? The other one still looks fine and active. These turkeys have not been in contact with my chickens, ducks and peafowl. Also it looks like they haven't touched there food. Thanks for the help everyone!! Ive never culled an animal before so that would be vary hard for me!!
