What did our forefathers feed their chickens?

My chickens largely fend for themselves in ranging weather. I give them dinner left overs and they do get a scoop of organic layer everyday. In the winter, they live in the barn and are more dependent on me.

I'm thinking that the chickens probably free-ranged for grass and bugs and were given leftovers from the kitchen.
