What Did You Cover Your Run With?

I have a 10 X 19 kennel that we are turning into a run for the chickens. There is no shade where the run is at. I was wanting something that would offer shade and protect from hawks without building a roof over the run. A tarp won't work because it will collect water when it rains. What else is there? Thanks!

On my permanent runs I have white vinyl lattice with corrugated plastic over one end. Over my temporary breeder runs I have deer netting.

The lattice is a good idea! I am lucky the building and a tree give my girls some shade because I just used chicken wire.

Shade cloth would work well also, and not collect rainwater.

I used regular fence wire (2 x 4) squares- stapled it to 2 x 4's-( 16 inch centers)---then added one tarp for shade near the barn shaped outbuilding. I hope to put some corragated plastic panels near the barn this summer- maybe 6 clear sheets. I wish I had done that in the beginning. But my bad winter and all the snow broke the 2 x 4s in several places and we have to go back and reinforce it all. I just got finished putting gravel- small type on the pen floors so it wont be so muddy and easy to take a water hose to. If you have any great ideas send them to me. tcltoughmom in WV

2x4 welded wire. I've got a couple of tin roofing panels turned kitty corner in the corners for shade. Thing to remember that is if you get any kind of snow, it could bring you kennel down in a hurry. You really need extra, EXTRA support for roof for anything that may hold snow, leaves, ice, etc.....

We bought one of those carport canopies and installed it over the run. Makes shade in the summer and keeps rain off in the winter. Someday the tarp will rot, and then we will cover the canopy frame with tin sheets.

Mine has a corrugated metal roof since we get significant snow loads during the winter...
