What did you do in the garden today?

another 6 inches of snow last night. Piles along my private road and long driveway are now 8 foot wide and 4-5 foot high. Now comes the rain...... I have had enough.:he It is now the snowiest winter season on record here. good grief.

We’ve already received 75% of our annual rain fall and it’s only March. The forecast is for 5 days of snow. We’re headed for a record too.
Dunno Iffin that makes you feel any better
Cabin fever is real.
I try to look at everything in a positive way. All that EXTRA rain, and snow does trickle into the ground, and replenishes the depleted water shelf in the regional aquifers. I seen programs about the water shelf dropping substantially in areas of California. Many peeps wells ran dry.
I'm not sure how the water shelf levels are in both of your areas.:idunno

Not a lot since we are in our peak rainy season in California, but noticed today some plum pits I planted started germinating in the last couple days.

It doesn't work that way here this time of year. We have rapid melts and rain on frozen dormant clay ground and it's all just runnoff. Then ice jamming and flooding.

My well is 430 feet deep as I am on top of of of the highest hills in the area. And that taps into an aquifer not a spring.

What sits in the fields, delaying planting, compacts the soil, requiring extra time and fuel to break down the soil pack for planting, and ectra nutrients to replace those lost my too much water.

Not to mention what it's doing to the wildlife and livestock. Quail, turkey, pheasant....the deer are down to eating trees .bad news.

It's just far too much, too often, for too long. Record breaking. Here it takes 2-10 years for water to trickle down to the water tables, if the top 10 inches isn't frozen solid to start with.

And my diesel and propane usage.....2 months extra of arctic chill...an extra tank of gas for the house. Yikes $$$$$

We have had less snow than normal here, however, it got pretty cold in October and has remained below normal / average temps. It would warm up enough to get ice storms or snow, freezing rain then bitter temps. This winter needs to go away now. We are all sick of it. It was supposed to be 10 - 15F overnight last night, however, when I got up this morning it was 1F. The high today is forecasted to be 37F. I'm holding on to that hope. I finally started my leek seeds. I'm trying the cardboard TP tubes cut in half. I'll let you know how that goes. Will be starting my herbs this weekend. We should all sing "Hit the road Jack (Frost), and don't come back no more!" :yesss:

Just like California we’ve been in a drought for years. California burns EVERY year!!:hit
Yes the rainfall is helping the water table. All the snow in the Rocky Mountains (having record amounts of snow pack) feeds the Colorado River which feeds Lake Mead which has needed help for the last 25 years. So yes that’s a positive thing.
It just seems like some are really getting more than their fair share :th

The way the forecast looks we will have a slow melting of this glacier encrusted ground. That's a good thing. I would prefer to avoid sticky mud. The main gate that leads to my garden is frozen in 16 inches of ice and that is on the north side of my property. So that will take some time to thaw. As soon as I can get to my garden beds I want to put plastic over the bed I am planting the peas in. That should thaw it enough to plant the peas. I will be building another raised garden frame with some of the pallets I got with my stove pellet deliveries to plant the leeks in. Today is the first day in quite sometime it has been above freezing. Yay! Planting time is coming. And tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the purchase of my Wee Farm. What an adventure this year has been. :celebrate
