Hi @jerryse, I googled the bugs. I've never noticed the squash borer in my garden. I have seen the squash beetles and stink bugs which apparently are a type of squash bug. Who knew, LOL! I don't use any chemicals on my property only organic / natural remedies. I did have a lot of slugs last year. I thought about doing the saucers of beer however, I have squirrels and chipmunks in the mix as well and I'm thinking intoxicated rodents might be a whole new issue. I'll see how the coffee grounds work this year.

I was watching youtube about squash bores . Seems planting cucumbers around your squash helps confuse the moth that lays the eggs . Also resistant squash like butternut , cushaw and small ornamental gourds . So helps your summer squash .

That's interesting. I'm still on the fence about whether or not to plant asparagus. I haven't figured out exactly where to put a dedicated asparagus bed. I like the idea of growing it quicker as our growing season here is short enough.

If I lived where there was decent soil and I had to do it all over again. I’d plant my asparagus in an area where it could spread. In rows that would be able easy to hula hoe. Very young asparagus cannot compete with weeds.
It takes years (3-4) before you can harvest asparagus. But once established a crown can produce for 20-25 years they naturally reseed them selves so to me that’s more than a lifetime of asparagus. I reseed areas in my box every year. This is my first real harvest year I’m so excited.

Yes...the spears start off skinny and inedible. Each year they thicken in size. That’s probably why it’s so expensive in groceries or restaurants.

Beer does drown slugs. My chickens will also snack on slugs, but may do more harm , than good if let loose among the garden.

There's a crew of guys on the next acreage putting up a pole barn. I asked them for their card as I have a friend looking for someone to build their new barn. I found out they also do fences. I asked them how much it would cost to drill me 9 holes for the fence around my garden. The soil here is easy digging for about 12 inches, then it is a concrete of glacial deposit of clay that even a small two man hand-held auger can manage. Doing it with a post hole digger is out of the question.

They quoted me an incredible price, I'll take care of the posts, concrete, fencing etc. The build is not problem. The holes were.

Then I asked them if they would cut 3 sheets of my old steel from my barn to the right length if I took it over to them when they started up their electric cutters. My coop run has a small leak and a steel roof instead of asphalt would fix it. I told them I'd make a batch of cookies and they said DEAL!

So my morning. OH. and I had a woman stop by who saw the hens out terrorizing the world and me in the orchard and asked if I had eggs. I said I was sold out now, but will have some by the end of the week. She said, "what color are they? I PREFER brown eggs." Oh dear lord lady they're all the same. I told her I didn't have any white eggs, and mine are mostly blue and greens. She looked at me dumbfounded. I told her all eggs are the same no matter the color. She said, "Oh, I prefer brown."

Lord Help Me.

Photo’s of a one year old then two then three. My oldest are 4 years old. The very first thing I grew for my garden was asparagus in pots...then the first bed we built and filled was asparagus. My chickens will jump to eat the seeds (little red pea size balls) but they don’t bother the spears.
