What did you do in the garden today?

So I think my naughty spaghetti squash is finally starting to put out female flowers. Thank goodness. The yardlong beans have started their inevitable take over of the entire planet, and my cucumbers are growing from one bed, to my unprepared bed I hadn't added biological matter to. I'm not mad... I'm impressed. They're 5' away. No cucs yet, but the flowers, like winter, are coming.

My goodness that was a sweet little poem @MissChick@dee.

Today I rethink my garden. :hmm
It turns out both hubs and I are diabetic so even some kinds of veggies aren't so good for us.

I will plant one small patch of corn for the chickens and my son to enjoy. No potatoes (that one kills me). No winter squash unless it is for the hens.
:barnie

Good news is eggs are ok! :woot

I seem to be more sensitive to carbs than hubby so that's fun. :hmm

Lots of stuff to go in the ground this week. I will try to grow broccoli and Brussel sprouts. Those are new for me to grow.

I think we all succumb to diabetes around a certain age. My A1C hovers at the borderline. I still eat carbs but not as much. Sourdough bread is good as it is lower on the glycemic scale than other breads. My problem is with fruit. I like fruit but I eat very little of it because it puts pounds on me. I'm also trying broccoli this year. Never had much luck with it at my other house, but I'm hoping it does better here. Good luck with yours.

Thank you for the lovely poem @MissChick@dee.

I agree we all end up with issues eventually.

I bet that there is a giant portion of the population that is diabetic but just doesn't know.

Even sweet peas are problematic. :hmm
Snow peas for whatever reason aren't. Lol I have lots of regular sweet peas planted and very little snow peas. :lau figures!

We tried Brussel sprouts last spring. We bought starts and planted them. We were not impressed. They grew but they forgot to grow the actual sprouts on the stem... However, I know it is usually a fall crop, so I ordered 12 starts from Burpee to arrive for fall planting. They do this based on your zone. Sadly, their timing was wrong and we got the sprouts too late ...the plants and sprouts grew, but the cold weather stopped their growth so we got sprouts the size of marbles across two varieties. This spring I started some Brussel sprout seeds, and they are planted in the bed that gets late afternoon, evening shade. Hoping for a better outcome as it is a different variety from the three varieties we tried last year.

On a positive note, the chickens LOVE the plants and will eat it all down to the stem if you uproot the plants and toss in their run!

Morning happy Mothers Day the poem was great thank you .. I had not planted brussle sprouts before but did this year probably bought too many yes fed a few to the chickens
have taken pork out dinner but not allot of thoughts otherwise

Afternoon all :frow

I did a full coop cleanout in the big house today and did my biannual spray of permethrin. I have a new dog door coming to put over the wider opening we had to make for the pop door. I've had a few pigeons in the coop so better safe than sorry. I also rearranged the mini coop and took out the heat plate.

I've finally decided the first side of the compost turner has enough in it to finish off over the summer so I started on the other barrel. The first one smells wonderful, I can't wait to use the dirt in the garden!

Have a great day everyone.
