What did you do in the garden today?

Smoke from Canada is trying to kill us all. But gardening must go on.

This morning I managed to get all 20 squash plants in. Some don't look

great.

I also built a drip irrigation system for them. Taking a clean air AC break for 30 min before I head to the veg garden.

We had smoke so thick from three states fires last year couldn't breathe but also learned I had pneumonia got to the hospital doc there said good thing I came in then I was really sick pup finally got short pants on again above 65

we had a 6 hour break from smoke today as a front blew through, but now it's back. It's hard being upside down in the garden when you can't breathe to start with.

OK SO, I trimmed back the rye grass, and at the hardware store (went to town to by a new trowel, so that I could find the one I lost at the house. Isn't that the way that works?) And while I was there I saw these heavy duty augers for drills and planting bulbs. The even had a good flat side for the drill so they just wont spin on the drill.

So for 22$ I bought it to give it a try. OMG where has this been all my life??!?!?! It wouldn't work in clay, but my soil is deep compost mulched soil. Not fluffy, but not clay anymore. It makes a 4 inch hole as deep as 30 inches. GET THOSE TOMATOES DEEEEEP!

They're wide enough for fresh compost soil and my starter plant! I drilled all my garden holes in 20 minutes! :wee

I'll plant tomorrow morning.

I was testing the drip irrigation in the garden before I went in and halfway through they all stopped. I started checking everything. Perplexed. Annoyed. Hot. Sweaty. Humpf. WTH?

Turns out when DS went in , he actually turned the faucet off. :lau.

We still have sloppy mud and a small amount of standing water around the raised beds. And we haven’t had rain for a few days. Still no action on farm field across street or behind us...ground too wet I guess. It is strange that it’s June and I haven’t seen a single farm field planted, but spouse has seen a couple - as it’s a far drive for work.

Garden is growing! Some bugs, but nothing concerning right now. The cukes (2 kinds) finally sprouted. Carrots and beets are so-so. Planted extra pepper starts in pots, so we will see how well they do - always iffy with pots bc they dry out so quickly and they are in a bit of a windy area.

Neighbor A has a wet garden and not near the success as last year bc of the wet. Neighbor Bs garden looks very good, but his is at a somewhat higher elevation (good drainage) and is like one big raised bed as it is bordered by a large, old log to keep in the soil. They are both older men, so they give each other advice, which differs on everything, of course!

I bought some new zucchini plants, 2 yellow bell pepper, and 1 orange bell pepper. They had "last chance veggies (cabbage & collards) for 10 cents a 4 pack. I picked up 4 of the collards to add to my garden. I figure if nothing else I'll feed them to the chickens or dig them in the garden to help improve the soil. My previous zucchini plants and 3 pepper plants have all but about died due to too much rain!!
So what is in the forecast for next week? Lots of rain! I did just recheck the forecast and it has gotten a little better. Now it's only 4 days of thunderstorms and 1 day of rain. :lau
Tomorrow is supposed to be partly cloudy and then the next sun we are supposed to see after that is 8 days later (another partly cloudy day). But that could all change.

I did go to Home Depot and Cash-n-carried home a container of the Critter Ridder.
critterridder.PNG

2 Lbs, for about $15+
Applied it and will see how well it repels my friends:mad:... Yes I was slightly upset this morning when I seen they sneaked into some of my flower pots:barnie
I also planted a few more containers with seeds and covered with chicken wire until established. Then I will be sprinkling the critter ridder, when I have to remove the chicken wire.
Planted; sorrel, dill (2 types), and rhubarb (2 types).
I am happy with this product, since it does not contain harmful chemicals.:thumbsup It is safe for ORGANIC GARDENING.:caf

Good morning gardeners. I got some more weed whacking done yesterday. I did the front yard and behind the main garden area where the poison ivy grows. I put some wire around my new compost pile and added to it. The supervised "free ranging" is going well. I had the littles out for half an hour than added the hens. That lasted about 10 minutes then Miss Vicious chased them all inside. At least she didn't try to kill them this time. The weather forecast this week is confusing. Right now it's misting but hope it clears off as I still need to mow the backyard. Hi @cavemanrich, I too liked that the CR does not have nasty chemicals in it. I don't like adding chemicals to the soil. I do have to spray tick repellent to my work shoes because the ticks are so bad here. Happy gardening everyone. I hope the weather improves for you.
