What did you do in the garden today?

I will be putting out the trail camera just to be sure. That was the weird thing last night though., the man door on both coops were still open and the chickens were still inside. I would think that would have made them easy pickings! Which is another reason I think it was a bird of prey. But it must have been a big one to take on an adult female turkey. Of course she was a smaller breed of turkey but still!
Maybe an owl? They can get pretty big.

Good afternoon gardeners. It's windy today so I'm staying inside as much as possible. I took inventory of the pantry and freezers, made a couple loaves of banana bread and now I'm relaxing with pups for a bit. I need to organize my lists and then figure out what I need to start looking for when we have to shop. I got some yeast from a friend and I have some sourdough starter on the way. My DHs cousin told me about a potato sourdough starter their grandmother used when she baked bread. We're going to give it a try together (virtually) and see what we think so I'll have lots of bread making options. I feel a nap coming, I was up in the middle of the night and did stuff. Have a great evening.

Well Thursday night we had a temperature drop of almost 60 degrees and howling winds. The drop happened quickly and I think I lost my hive. I had checked it days before and they were fine. Two weeks before that fine. Over three weeks they had build 4 new falls of comb to prep for honey and brood. I blew on the opening today and no one came to it to greet me. I opened her up and they had plenty of people food ( honey has been gone since January - too warm and they were active and eating all winter.) They had open water. But there were only about two handfuls of bees left and the queen was dead. When I warmed those left up there was a little movement, but not much. So we shall see. These bees were imported from California, and I just don't think of hearty enough stock.....the breed usually does well in the cold, but not this stock.
Neighbor lost a hive, another lost two...just this since Thursday. We were so close to pollen season. Oh well. I'm going to try to find local bees and keep my swam trap up.

On the garden side, I called the county, which gives away free compost dirt if you come get it. And they had a load in. SO I took all my loose 5 gallon buckets and shovel and double loaded my poor truck. I'll have enough to mix with local clay and alpaca poo for the apple trees and enough to top off the garden rows to refresh planting spots.

Once word gets out that the compost pile is in, it goes quickly!
OH and I got rid of one of my egg customers on purpose. UGH.

It's rainy and cold here so I'm doing nothing garden wise today. Just planning what I'm going to plant
In the same boat. Awful weather and snow scheduled for Thursday. I'm so sick of this weather!

Texas went into "shelter-in place" today so we (as a collective whole - departments and all) moved 7000+ courses offered via our Uni that are F2F to an online LMS. *I work remotely from CA. What a f**king mess. Excuse my English...

I long for a day of sunshine and gardening...

I've had some hens that have vanished out of thin air. No rhyme or reason as to their departure. I'm so sorry for your loss. It's even more frustrating, in my opinion. Like there's no closure...

What I did in the garden today: Diddly squat. Because snow.
On the plus side, I got out of the house for a few hours, made chili and cornbread for dinner, and Marshmallow laid another one of her cute little eggs.
On the down side: Snow. And it's accumulating. It isn't done, either -- there's supposed to be another snowstorm at the end of the week... blech. Maybe I'll start something inside....
Sometimes the weather just sorta decides, "No, you will not be having a pleasant day outside."

So glad my son did 6 years of digital homeschooling and DH has been teaching digitally and F2F since 2001! LOL. Second nature at our house. (I've always worked from home remotely online since 1994!!! Dial up and 1400 baud baby!)

It is wise to get them acclimated to online learning; i.e. using an LMS and being responsible. I too have been working digitally (albeit, in San Diego initially) since 2001. Started under-grad uni (online) way back in the 90's when I could just take one or two courses at the most. Anyways, this entire issue and having to telecommute is changing people's opinions about working at home. Ain't so grand as they thought it to be...hopefully people will just calm the ** down. Work is Work. Just do it.
