Well Thursday night we had a temperature drop of almost 60 degrees and howling winds. The drop happened quickly and I think I lost my hive. I had checked it days before and they were fine. Two weeks before that fine. Over three weeks they had build 4 new falls of comb to prep for honey and brood. I blew on the opening today and no one came to it to greet me. I opened her up and they had plenty of people food ( honey has been gone since January - too warm and they were active and eating all winter.) They had open water. But there were only about two handfuls of bees left and the queen was dead. When I warmed those left up there was a little movement, but not much. So we shall see. These bees were imported from California, and I just don't think of hearty enough stock.....the breed usually does well in the cold, but not this stock.
Neighbor lost a hive, another lost two...just this since Thursday. We were so close to pollen season. Oh well. I'm going to try to find local bees and keep my swam trap up.
On the garden side, I called the county, which gives away free compost dirt if you come get it. And they had a load in. SO I took all my loose 5 gallon buckets and shovel and double loaded my poor truck. I'll have enough to mix with local clay and alpaca poo for the apple trees and enough to top off the garden rows to refresh planting spots.
Once word gets out that the compost pile is in, it goes quickly!
OH and I got rid of one of my egg customers on purpose. UGH.
