What did you do in the garden today?

My plants have been hardening off every day for weeks now bc they have to go outside in order to get enough sun. Maybe in the future I’ll buy a grow light -I used to have some years ago but we’ve moved 3x since then. Hopefully this is the last week of cold weather.

nice weather predicted for today, not very warm at mid 50s, but warmer than the current 37F right now.

Morning . Went to Walmart and Farm and Fleet yesterday . Had not bern there in a month . I noticed a poor selection of plants . I do not think they were picked over . It looked to me like that they have ordered fewer plants . It was rainy and early so not crowded . Planned it that way .

we’ve seen a lot more picked over plants too. Some places have more than others. One feed/farm store (an independent one, not big box). Is planting more seeds to try to meet the demand. Normally they have all theirs ready for the spring season, and that’s it, but must have quickly sold out - happy I went when they just opened their greenhouses So I had a really good selection.

Eriosoma lanigerum, one of the common problems in apple trees. Can be controlled choosing the appropriated rootstock and a hose of water can also remove it, but for a while. They will return. It will not attack the fruit but will distort a little the stems and is mostly an aesthetical problem

Same thing here @Acre4Me - they are trying hard to keep up with the demand of new gardeners because of the food shortages. Same with the mail order seed companies, many are sold out of tons of stuff. I was glad I ordered early, but went back to grab a couple additions & they were all sold out of everything. It seems they're finally catching up now. & chicks! No one can keep baby chicks in stock! My neighbor couldn't even get any meat birds from the hatchery until fall. She doesn't want to cull in the middle of the winter so she went with dual purpose birds that won't be here till middle of summer!

Crazy times.

Wow!! I called hatchery about meat chickens and had to order for 4 weeks out (pick up late May). They said their phone has been ringing off the hook! They were already sold out of certain regular breeds for the year! Well, this will be the first year for 2 batches of meaties: May and September chicks for July and October harvests. Hmmm...might need to place my September order now...

Good morning gardeners. What a wonderful morning here in New England. Sunny and 32F at first light. It's up to 45F already thank goodness. I am so glad I'm waiting until next week to finish planting. Yes @Sueby, I'm ready for the dusting of snow predicted for Friday night into Saturday morning. I think I will start pricing sturdy supports for expanding the hoop gardens as it looks like I just may need to. This is why I bought an incubator @Acre4Me and why I keep my rooster around. The folks at the feed store warned me two months ago that the hatcheries weren't able to keep up with demand. I finished cleaning and prepping the remaining garden beds yesterday and put up the bean teepees. Good golly they look much shorter this year, I think I'll have to replace them with 6 footers. I may try to get a little weed whacking done this afternoon. This morning is my aerobic exercises and baking bread. I got the sourdough working on it's first rise already. I am waiting until I'm ready to plant the asparagus to open the bag and see what's in there. It will be fun to see how we all do with the asparagus this year. It would be nice to have something other than green beans to eat with all those potatoes I'm planting. Have a great day everyone. Oh @karenerwin, I always thought irises existed solely for "eye candy." Whatever, you should be proud they are very pretty.

Here are my starts acclimating on my deck. I waited until it hit 41F to put them out. At least the sun is making an appearance today. Over 100 veg starts. Strawberries in the 5 rectangular planters in the top of the pic -more strawberries in the raised beds.

You all make me so jealous having so much room to grow stuff. Even though I doubled the size of my garden this year, I could double it again right now & probably still want more. Everything I grow has to grow up in raised beds so things like strawberries & melons aren't really doable for me with the placement of our leach field & giant Oak trees. :hit
