What did you do in the garden today?

I never had bean rust until one year i bought rust resistant Kentucky Wonder beans. It's all been downhill from there. They used to be the one unfailable crop.
Right now, berries and our Shiro plum hold that distinction.

I pulled squash vine borers out of some squash plants today and covered the vines with dirt. They were looking a bit wilty. I saw an egg last week and knew i should work on it, but i didn't. I even bought BT last year, But I STILL didn't do what i needed to. Today there were frassy spots at the joints. The grubs are only about a quarter of an inch long so far, and most are still right by the joint where they chewed in. One joint had 2 grubs. I've never dug the grubs out so small. I feel like the plants will survive. I didn't even cut. I split the stems with my fingers, where they were bulged and splitting a little on their own. Generally from the bottom or side of the vine.

Any my super beautiful squash plant out in the front yard got almost all its leaves eaten last night by deer! It ate half a squash, too. We ate (most of) the other half.

Success stories, too! Not all gloom. The canby raspberry patch got a hard cull last year. Only plants with good flavor got to stay. Our crop was a lot smaller this year, but much better flavor! We're very happy.

And my one triple crown thornless blackberry plant has multiplied and I have about 13 bushes full of ripening berries. They're so good

Yesterday I cut out all the canes that just fruited on the raspberry plants. I think my hen was feeling pretty isolated behind them. We can see her again now. It's nice.

My ongoing kiwi experiment has some fruit that actually set and are growing this year.
It's been pretty lame. It's supposedly an Arctic Beauty hardy kiwi. But it's never really made fruit. Then again, I've never seen the male make flowers.

Weeded, gave the weeds to the chickens and ducks and harvested Yellow squash, zucchini, kale leaves, big tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, eggplants, jalapeños, chili peppers, bell pepper, too many green beans, red and yellow onions, banana peppers, a wide variety of herbs, blackberries, apples, some pears a cantaloupe and a couple of cucumbers 🥰 soon we will be letting the chickens in the garden to mow it down and plant our winter crops. We have enough this year to take it to the local market as well so we will be heading up there next weekend

Good morning gardeners. Welcome to the thread @Equi_Liz. Yesterday turned out to be not so wretched. The humidity dropped a bit so that helped. I got the front yard mowed. It's greening up a bit but there's major damage from the drought. I'll work on that when the weather cools down. The littles are getting really good about going back into their run after their "free range" time. So that makes life a bit easier. I picked a few peas this morning. That should be the last of them. Also picked some more bush beans. Was it @NewBoots that mentioned they planted bush beans this year as well. It is a nice treat to have early green beans while the pole beans are growing. My beans did very poorly last year so a few times I actually bought some at the grocery store. It's not the same as what you grow yourself. My cucumber plants are loaded with little cukes, yay! I watered the H. peppers and bird house gourds yesterday and the okra and bell peppers got watered this morning. Those are all in pots, the rest of the gardens are all fine for now. There were a couple of yellowing leaves on one of my potato plants this morning. I hope it's a sign that I can have some new potatoes soon. Temps are supposed to shoot up to 98F today with humidity. Ugh! I'll be hugging Mr. AC today. Have a great day everyone.

Morning everyone.
Temps finally dropped. Good bye 112s for a bit. Tonight we'll be upwards of an inch of rain, so I'll go out today and put down some worm castings and tomato food. I'll save the liquid feed for a dryer span and combine the water and feed session.

There is hay down all over the county. I have no idea how so many farmers missed the forecast on this one. I know hot and windy (we def had both) were there but the rain chances were far too high for too many days in a row, but there it is. It was cut Thursday, and now it will lay there on the ground until at least this Thursday before it's dry enough to bale. What a waste.

The guy that did mine last year and did such a job of it last year that we went and bought our own equipment, did the 10 acres across the street and the 8 acres down the road. All three owners don't have animals so they just sell the hay outright to him and he stores and resells it for 10-12$+ a bale to others when animals are off pasture. Mold has been an issue in the past. UGH. I just wish I could warn prospective customers.

Mustard has bolted nicely.

Tomatoes are plugging along. I still feel they should be much further along, but, it is what it is.

Horseraddish looks great.

Cabbages are due to be inspected again.

Cushaw melons are underwhelming. At my neighbors house across the valley they are going NUTS. Go figure.

OK, lessons, breakfast, and out to the garden and workshop. HAGDA!

HOT HOT HOT!!! But, a breeze is picking up, and we should be getting rain and storms this evening.

Garden is doing well. Newly planted bed is happy with the heat ( and the hose water 2x per day), sprouts are doing well.

FINALLY the gourds are growing fast. They are putting out tendrils and a couple are climbing. We planted 5 types, but 2 of the types were poor germinators. Here are pics of the gourds from this morning.

and 5 types growing on this side (10 planting spots, but a couple of spots never sprouted). This side, which is south facing) gets less sun than the east facing side, so these are not growing as fast.
