heavy fog here.. Sun looks to be burning it off

We had crazy weather today here, not too far from you - it got hazier and hazier, the wind got huge, it started smelling like fire. The power at work kicked off and on again several times, then Mr. Dog texted me from home that we lost power, the wind was crazy, and big branches had come down on the compost bin and my new chicken yard. I think maybe the strong wind has been blowing the Yakima wildfire in our direction? It sure smells like that.
It sounded like a heavy rain, but there was no rain - just leaves and branches being blown around in the wind.
Power was back again by the time I got home, thankfully. I took Lily out to potty, and shined the flashlight into the field, but we didn't want to walk down there among the trees because the wind was still pretty strong. Lily was happy to come right back inside.
I think I'll wait until morning to assess any damage. Nothing looks too bad, from what I can see so far.

Sorry for your loss @karenerwin. Kind thoughts and warm wishes for you and your family. Good morning gardeners. I actually did take most of the day off yesterday. I did get the garden watered yesterday but that's about it. Today it's back to work. I picked all the green Roma tomatoes to make the last batch of salsa verde. I also picked another half pound of green beans.Yesterday my daughter was delighted in finally getting to pet a chicken and then she fed one of the chipmunks a cherry tomato. For the entertainment value, the little booger munched it all up while she was watching. So I guess to say thank you the little darling did some "weeding" in my garden and munched all but one radish top. That's OK. So aside from watering the peppers and okra, the work for the day will be making the salsa and slicing peaches for the freezer. I hope your storm damage isn't too bad @littledog. We got close to 6” rain yesterday

Unusual for this time of the year. But, some areas just north of us I think got even more. The bulk Of heavy rain came around 11 pm to 1am this morning.

we did grill our dinner outside, over the open fire...in the rain. We used pans to shield the fire and food. Worked great, we just got wet.

garden is watered, should be happy.

Greenhouses usually get pretty humid inside, around here, anyway. When they are attached to the house, do you need any kind of moisture barrier to keep the house dry?

Its actually not attached to the house, there is a five foot gap between the house and the green house. I may extend it 5 more feet next fall if I decided I wanted to have more space. If I do extend it there would be a vapor barrier between the siding of the house and the Greenhouse but it would be reflective material rather than clear. I can't say exactly how I am going to do things because I need to monitor heat and humidity during the winter. I have no idea what size vents I need or if I need exhaust fans. It's more of a learning process than anything else.

We are also going to build a greenhouse this fall/winter using the parts and pieces I have saved from taking my friend's greenhouse down. We too are just going to be winging it. The hardest part so far is figuring out where to put it!

I wish you could share some of your rain over here!

a farmer friend posted their rain gauge: just shy of 5” in a couple of hours! Another fb friend asked if they had any flooding. Farmer friend said “No, it went into all the big cracks in the farm field”. but, there are those dealing with flooded basements today. Rain is good, but I like the 0.25-0.75” rain, then it stops and waits a day or so before raining again.

The hardest part so far is figuring out where to put it!

That is a hard part, and every place I wanted it either was in mostly shade or a flood zone. I didn't want to place it in decent gardening areas either so it eventually ended up on my deck. I was going to slap it together with coop parts somewhere in the back but when I determined that my deck was the best option I splurged on decent pressure treated wood and I am attempting to build something that may sell with the house. I have never seen a greenhouse on a deck and I may end up finding out the problem with having cold air touching all 6 sides of a cube (not that its a cube but you get the point).

Morning all.

Not much going on here today. I have a couple squash to pick, I can't believe they're still producing. My tomato crop this year is just crappy. My chickens have gotten half of it. Oh well, no biggie - I don't grow enough to sustain us anyhow. The lettuce in the pot is starting to peek through, can't wait for lettuce again. I'm sure I'll have another big haul of green beans, they are exploding right now.

I talked to the chicken lady today, my pullets will be ready in 3 weeks. This is a dumb time of year to be getting pullets I think! Winter care for no eggs, lol. I just hope I can get them integrated before winter comes, the other coop has no electricity.
