What did you do in the garden today?

It is nice to have snowdrop plants in bud growing in an appropriate setting today. We also have winter jasmine, Vinca minor and Sweet Breath of Spring in bloom reminding us that a few flowers can be had even during the middle of winter. Ordered Portulaca seeds today - they also add a great deal of enjoyment during the summer months!

Got some more of that garden fence taken down I’ll probably finish tomorrow. Started a pot of mint and transferred some of the rosemary to a different pot. I’m looking at putting in an order to Gurneys for some Plums and Raspberries. I wanted some peaches and pears too but they were out of the pear I wanted and turns out they can’t ship peaches to my state.

Good afternoon gardeners! It’s Friday Eve and I’m very happy about it. Today turned out to be warmer than expected and sunny but the breeze is picking up this afternoon. I got some duck weed to try growing. I scooped out three gallons of gunky water from the duck pool and put the plants in this afternoon.

The ducks have done a nice job of trimming all the green on the lower branches of this Mexican bird of paradise so I’ll trim the bare branches and leave it to grow this year

Here’s my little tree thing. It’s hard to get pics right now because the leaves are still purple but it added more leaves over winter

It was sunny this morning, so I went up to the green house and snipped off the last of the kale. It's supposed to get single-digit cold for the next week to ten days, so I thought I'd just cut it all for the chickens. I put some clear plastic bowls over the spinach seedlings. We'll see if they survive. :fl

We haven't really had winter yet. December and January were very mild and not much snow. Paybacks are hell.

SOOO glad I don't have to drive in this stuff any more...

That’s what’s happening here to some extent. It’s been a mild year weather wise. It’s to early to know for certain but right now they’re forecasting a rare snow with temps in the teens for the end of next week.... I’ll enjoy it if it snows but I really wanted to get my peas in the ground this week.

I saw a couple of responses about my gnat problem. Just wanted to say that I've been battling these gnats for months. I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun... Yellow sticky traps. Jars with ACV, water, dish soap, beer, et al....with and without saran wrap covers. I've tried Raid, fly swatters, etc... What ended up working the best was the spray bottle with a mix of Peppermint castile soap and neem oil (mixed with water). I had seemingly eradicated them until they suddenly began reappearing a few days ago. Ground zero seemed to be....wait for it....my pantry. It got so bad that I just started pulling EVERYTHING out of the pantry. After a few minutes, I *found* the source of the gnats. I can't tell you WHAT IT WAS.....ugh. There was a bag that I can only describe as black mush which had fallen in the back of a high shelf. From the sticker on the bag, I can only imagine it was bread or some type of deli item. It had expired last October.... :sick The bag literally had THOUSANDS of gnats inside it and all over it. With gloves on, I carried it outside to the trash can. In the past day alone, I've killed at least a 100 gnats that have managed to escape. Their numbers are FINALLY dwindling although there are still some flying about.
