What did you do in the garden today?

Put the green onion tape down and planted 92 yellow onions.
hoop house is in the 50s and it's cloudy, outside is 33.

In the seed shed I removed the domes from the marigold and kept them on heat, but moved them to an upper light that is super low to the starts. Watered the solo cup tomatoes on heat, although nothing is up.
Planted some green beans for transplant in a couple of weeks into the hoop house. And a spare tray of tomatoes to use or transplant.

They shut down all bird sales/shows/trade/auctions in the state. UGH.
I have to tell you I made a run to BJs today because there are certain things I can't find at the stores here. When I found boneless/skinless chicken breasts at $1.99 a lb I bought a whole bunch (not hoarding, preparing!). Thighs too. I didn't really need any, I'm pretty well stocked, but I feel like there will be a shortage soon, or at least a jump in prices. Someone has to pay for all those lost birds. Hopefully it passes quickly, but the chicken won't go to waste here no matter what happens.

Speaking of...now my plans to do a round of meat birds this fall has gone to heck. Looks like I am probably facing back surgery. I'm so concerned about losing the garden, missing out on the meaties & I'm scared about DH having to carry water & feed for me. I won't be able to lift over 5 lbs (maybe it's 10?) for 6 months I think. He says not to worry, but of course I do. The garden & chickens take a lot & he is facing ankle & knee replacement surgery. Man it sucks to get old, I def do not recommend it. I honestly feel like I need to put it off till after the harvest. I can't lose everything, we count on what I put up. :hit Totally stressing about this.

Are there any responsible teens in your area that you could pay a little bit plus give eggs to help w your flock until you are up and about again?

Call your local 4H club and see if they have a couple kids. OC with HPAI anyone WITH birds should be near YOUR birds....so. But by then we should be clear of the season.

Heck, I don't pass up good deals. I can can it!
I was withing 20 minutes drive of a place last weekend that I KNOW has good quality chicken breast meat for a great price, so I went and put up chicken for two days. I LOVE having ready made in the pantry to grab and make my life a little faster or easier later. (Adding in I've switched only buying marked known brands of chicken as I managed food poisoning (mild) from store brand, water/acid added chicken to save $ just after Christmas. Nope. Not again. There was frozen chicken breast on bone in the freezer section on foam trays, not even an origin on them that I could see, and I've never seen them there before. NOPE)

Did a search here in Arkansas and found this -

LITTLE ROCK (TBP) —
As further mitigation against confirmed cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in surrounding states, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Livestock & Poultry Commission has activated the Arkansas Avian Influenza Emergency Rule. The new emergency rule will be in effect from March 23 to July 20.

Under the emergency rule, it is prohibited to exhibit poultry and domestic waterfowl or move poultry or domestic waterfowl from or within an affected area. Poultry with commuter agreements or premovement avian influenza testing by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or antigen capture are exempt from this provision.

Poultry and waterfowl cannot be sold, bartered, traded, auctioned, or given away at fairs, swap meets, auctions, flea markets, and similar events and locations within an affected area. Chicks and ducklings three weeks of age or less originating from a NPIP certified flock are exempt from this provision.

An affected area is defined by the rule as a radius of 25 miles surrounding a flock with a confirmed case of HPAI.

Im not sure how your set up is, but a kids wagon with good wheels is an excellent tool while down a limb and trying to feed critters. Also even though they need replacing yearly, the collapsible hoses will save alot of trouble hauling water. They weigh next to nothing and empty themselves.
