What did you do in the garden today?

Interesting. I've read about hand pollinating squash (it's not too hard, but is kind of "fiddly"), but I've never done it. Since DH and I both love butternut, that's all I've bothered to grow. If we want something else, we buy one at a farmer's market.
Super simple to hand pollinate the summer squash/zucchini I grow, but I've never done butternut!
So question about snakes. We have these babies only. Are they dangerous to chickens? It’s some little gsrden snake type. I like them in the garden for mouse control.

Looks like a garter snake. Shouldn't be of any harm to the chickens, not sure if it would even bother with eggs. Of course I run if I see a snake so I could be so wrong. :gig

I LOVE seeing them, and I feel so bad when I accidentally scare one. I sit and watch them moving through the garden rows sometimes! I think one spends time under the loose board of one of the raised beds. I’m weird like that! 😂

I'm surprised you have grass! I didn't picture that. 🤔

Nice job, I love it!!

@Acre4Me - beautiful, as usual!

Picked a ton more strawberries. Weeded a bit. Still have unopened flowers on the squash, taking forever!

Probably a stupid question, can different kinds of squash pollinate each other, assuming I'm not saving seeds? Like I have kabocha, spaghetti, crookneck, zucchini etc. Can they pollinate each other?
It’s just a small patch for the dogs, maybe 75 square feet.

Can't really tell from the picture how big it is.... But it looks like a little brown snake.. If it is, they don't get very big and feed on worms, snails, and slugs. Not a threat to chickens at all....

Rat snakes, racers, and black snakes, however, will eat baby chicks in a heartbeat.

Your located in NY? Assuming thats where your seeing these little critters.

It looks like a gartner, possibly whipsnake? Are they fast?

Im not really thinking a whipsnake though because its rather thick.

How long?

Some different picture angles could help aswell.
