What did you do in the garden today?

Interesting..... I need to do this! It's too bad I tossed everything so far. Oh well. If we don't find many more, I know what to do next year.

I have so many questions about caring for these apple trees. We have 4 in the yard that are quite large, and the gypsy moth caterpillars are all over them. The smallest tree is probably 15+ feet tall, and the biggest has to be over 20 feet. Every time I learn something new about them, it really just brings up more questions!

I do not know too much about fruit trees. But, my spouse knows a bit more- grew up in E WA, where many apples are produced. His dad loves apples so much, he grows over 100 apple trees (probably over 80 varieties) for his own personal enjoyment (fresh, dried, and regular pressed cider). So he spent teen years working as an apple thinner at local orchards and helping his dad. Apple trees need to be sprayed several times -with what and when, I am not sure, but the apples required the most attention of all his fruit trees. Apples are thinned anytime after flowering to partway into the growth season in part to produce larger apples and to reduce weight on branches. Generally, they are thinned to the center flower/fruit per flower cluster. Your tree may be self pruning fruit to some extent bc it can’t support that much fruit. In the fall/winter you can thin the branches and shorten the tree a bit - removing some of the taller branches. However, there is a logic to pruning, and how much (%) of limbs to leave on the tree, so you will need to do a little research . And, the other part is LIGHT- most commercial operations maximize light, and there are a few methods to do this in an orchard. In the backyard, you try to open up the canopy to allow the most light to reach as much of the tree as possible. Pruning is part of that. Separation of limbs (pushing two limbs farther apart, for example) is another aspect.

I always feed my chickens sunflower seeds in winter.
cool
I planted 27 sunflowers for the first time this year. 12 were baby transplant from my cousins property he purchased and planned to dig up 100's of sunflowers. So far they are doing well and have huge stalks! I wonder if they are the mammouth variety! I hope so. Love this time of year in new england.
yeah so far i have 190 sprouts because i planted late but its okay
pictures if you dont mind

Lol! I'm outside letting the gals free range and they are all with me when i get up to go picture the sunflowers; i look back and they are all frozen, standing in place. I look up....... 2 Hawks circling above! I'll hit those sunflowers a little later! 😳🌻🐓❤️
yeah i don't want to endanger your birds
i dont like hawks if there near my birds

Just got my first early squash!!! Vertical growing is a game changer!
I think I missed the tutorial on how to tie up your squash so it will grow vertically.... 😂

It looks good though! I probably could have/should have done the same. Wonder if my plants are too big now to do it? They are quite massive....

I think they’re called water totes? I’m reluctant to use plastic because our sun rots it in short order, but those might stand up a bit, especially if they’re surrounded to protect the plastic. Good idea, thanks!
We use these IBC totes in AZ (Mesa and Chino Valley) - we wrapped in black plastic (the plastic wrapping lasted a year or so) to keep sunlight from getting in. Next we built wooden fence panels to attach to them in Chino Valley because under big trees and didn't want them to get punctured by falling limbs & also shades them from sunlight - works ok. Now my DH is painting them black with a little strip left translucent to see water level. These are all the same totes, some transported from Mesa to Chino Valley so they have stood up well to the AZ sun for years now for us.

I use aviary netting... see link...

...on the 3 outdoor runs that didn't already have chicken wire covering them. I have a hawks nest every year just above my largest outdoor run and SO FAR haven't lost a bird to a hawk, maybe because some neighbors free range and I don't. I also tie the aviary netting with flag tape so any aerial predators know it's there to avoid it.

It's revolting out. I've been out since 730 working on the shade cloth. They're up. I'm so annoyed with them. They're supposed to be 10x10 feet, but they sure aren't squares. The corners come to a point, so if you put two next to each other like I have in the garden, there is a huge eye shape between the two. (They are shaped that way. It's not like it's that way because there are no midpoint anchors.)
PLUS, unlike my other cloths from the same company that are actually CLOTH/Canvas, this is like heavily woven plastics. I swear, if it stretches in the heat and needs constant tightening, I'll be fuming mad. Right now I've got them up as tight as a drum. DH even popped out and pulled the cloth while I turned the turnbuckles.
They'll provide shade shad and block a little hail, I suppose. I'm looking forward to a little shade while I work out there, to be honest.
