What did you do in the garden today?

I’m not sure. I can tell you that not all mesquite trees have the edible pods. To eat the pods they have to be dried and then ground into flour. It would take a lot of work, but if you didn’t have a full time job and lived off the land I suppose you’d likely have more time on your hands lol.

I know my chickens enjoy the leaves from the mesquite from time to time, so when we trim the trees we leave a branch out for them to nibble from. My sons goats like it also.

Here’s some more info about it

They're actually not a lot of work to process. You just pick some from the tree, let them dry or use a dehydrator, then run them through a coffee grinder or take them to this local place that will mill them for you. My youngest daughter is the one that collects and processes them every year. She makes about a gallon size bag of the flour. It takes her maybe an hour to collect the pods and an hour or two to grind them. She's my turtle kid...so I'm guessing it would take most people about half that time😂

Tiny bit of rain overnight. Managed to set up the irrigation finally and dig out a little palm tree that needed to go.

What do you mean by layering the vine?
Root a cutting while it's still attached. Not sure which works better for wisteria - either bury a vine and wait for it to root, or air layer something higher by stripping off the bark for a few inches, wrapping that in substrate and plastic so it thinks it's underground and starts rooting.

Looking for input on a pumpkin plant. This is my first time growing it. I have only one fruit. All the others have shriveled up with days of fruit appearing. Is there something I can do? I have many flowers and bees and vines.

have you checked for Squash Vine Borer? You will see the stem damaged, ofter with yellow crumbly stuff coming out of the stem - usually near/ on the main stem near the main roots (so, just above ground level). If you slice into the stem, you will find a largish white caterpillar. But, a heavy squash bug infestation can also cause problems. Any aphids or mites present?

If none of these, maybe it needs fertilizer. Squash are heavy feeders. Could be high temps as well.

Good afternoon gardeners. Dealing with the heat and scarce rain. We did get a surprise shower that produced .15 inch of rain early yesterday afternoon. I started cleaning up the 8 foot row of where I had planted potatoes yesterday. I found another pound of small potatoes. Still needs a bit more work before planting peas. This morning I thinned the new turnip seedlings and my second planting of carrots. The new summer squash and cucumber plants are looking quite good. Fingers crossed they will produce something. I picked my first eggplant this morning. It was small but the right color and firmness made me believe it was ready. I planted these for DD so she promised to take pictures when she cuts into it. The plants are still on the small side and I was hoping to encourage more fruit. I also picked the first 2 jalapeños of the season. There’s several more developing on the 3 plants I have. I haven’t seen my little ground hog friend “Baba Lou” since I scolded him out of the garden. I’ve never had much of a problem from his predecessors. Usually I have to scold them once a year and they leave my garden alone. I usually have a good growth of clover between the garden beds but there’s none this year. And the really love to eat clover. But only the backyard has clover and I’m sure the scent of the dogs are keeping both groundhogs and rabbits away. I believe I planted my potatoes a little too deep. Turns out I thought I had indeterminate potatoes, but apparently not. I may plant a few next year in containers then try again the following year with a larger planting. Next year I’ll be planting beans where the potatoes are. This weekend DD is taking me and my little Max on a drive to Ipswich and have lunch at the Clam Box. The most delicious clams and oysters you can get. We’ve decided to make it an annual tradition oh goodness. I have to go now and chase a chipmunk out of the chicken run.
