What did you do in the garden today?

Picked 2 buckets of beans & gave 1 to DSs coach. Also 3 zucchini (thought they were done), and 4 cucumber. New kale seed is almost big enough to pick, & I think we have enough arugula for a salad tonight! Will start pulling plants soon…garden will be winding down besides greens & carrots, and looks like I have 5 or 6 parsnips that grew! (New this year, never tried to grow them). Want to make sure I get things out so my rows have enough rest time before planting garlic in October

Does anyone have one of these trimmer mowers? Do they work pretty well? This one has a saw blade too for saplings. Eventually I'll have a tractor and bush hog but I need something now to cut paths and clear smaller areas for planting. Included photo of what I'd be cutting. Dogfennel is probably the toughest plant I have.

YEP I LOVE IT!!!! We have quick change plastics on ours. Ours will do small woody stems, but it goes through the plastic whips faster. But you can make your own from a spool of bulk weed cutter string. DH love love loves it.

FWIW you can get like 200 Lb test fishing line too and that will work as well. Look at the diameters etc and it can fill in in a pinch and if you get it on sale the price is a LOT cheaper and it lasts a comparable amount of time.

Dog fennel when it gets too big, Ill just actually wait for a bit of rain to soften the soil and pull it up roots and all. Bang the root ball a few times to knock the big dirt off, and throw the rest on a pallet and let it dry in the sun for a few weeks. after drying, ill bang again to get the rest of the now dry dirt out of the leaf pile and throw the rest into the fire pit and let it burn. I really should be mowing weekly to keep this stuff down but well.. sometimes we don't always get to the things we need to be doing :(

Must be at night for the black light to work. The hornworm's green color is fluorescent and the color POPS! against the green color of the tomato stems & leaves. Little suckers love to hide under leaves so you kind of need to look at things at different angles.
But the parasitic wasp eggs do help you see em better in daytime!!!
Joey luvs em like that!

I mustered up strength to start wacking away the biggest producer all summer...cucumbers! 4 little plants did way beyond what I could ever have imagined! And I got another basket full as I was wacking it down.
Pulled couple basil plants and gave to chickens that were looking rough.
Noticed I got what looks like a banana pepper on my bell pepper plant? How'd that happen? Long and yellow.
Then big basil plants are bolting...guess they r done.
Radish seeds have sprouted as well as radicchio! Pumpkin and squash plants are growing n bloomin!

Anyone know what this weed/bush is? It is the bane of my existence at the moment. It grows about 30" tall. Impossible to pull out of the ground by hand. Has little yellow-orange flowers that only open when the sun is out. Resistant against the weed eater too. Right PITA. Goats, chickens, and horses won't eat it.

I have something that looks very similar in my backyard.
It looks like cutleaf evening primrose. It grows like a weed.
the only thing that ithink will take it down is spraying it with herbacide, one of the broadleaf killers, (roundup) or a grass that can take over, like a centipede or bahia. Keep mowing it too to keep it down and that should help keep it from going hopefully for you.

I googled that plant and it doesn't look the same as the one taking over my pasture and chicken run. This is almost like a small shrub or bush. I'll go get a few more pictures.
