What did you do in the garden today?

corn bread works wonders, so does almond flower, I have a mill that sits on the counter it's loud as hell and you can't throw corn into it but other dry stuff it'll turn into flower whirr lickety split. Nuts want to turn more buttery but still can be made into bread if you do it right, just cut back on the water a bit, you'll have to play with each one, not sure if it's gf or not, i am sure some are but still it's a wonderful treat to play with.

the only bread I can NOT do is pumpernickel. although I love it, it's a coin flip if it rises or not for me, never figured out why. I can make a BIG batch let them run side by side, one rises the other, pumperbrickel. go figure.

I go shopping when I need to. and try to go only like once a month if i can help it. I hate dealing with those places and all the obnoxious.... never mind...... Load up the fridge and freezer with stuff and im good. The milk and stuff I don't drink too much but it stays well in my fridge, which I keep at right about 34 degrees. Bread, if I need ill make my own. Ok yes I cheat, I have one of those old sunbeam bread machines, throw the basic ingredients in and two hours later ill have bread. I like it a lot better than the chemical tasting crap from the store that can go MONTHS and NOT MOLD ??? wtf did you put in there that I am eating to make it not mold anymore????

Yes! How?! It boggles my mind.
Ive been going to a local bakery, but it took awhile to get used to bread going moldy in a week though. I had forgotten that. It is SO expensive though. I wouldnt mind a bread machine. I actually had forgotten about them. I used to bake my own bread and it usually did really well. Baguettes were not my thing 😂
Theres also frozen loaves that you just leave out to rise and thaw then bake. Not bad! I cant do #$** in this kitchen. Its utterly useless. Its about all i can manage to cook a meal, forget baking anything. No room.

When I buy from a local french bakery. I keep it in the freezer and pull out slices as we need them. THey don't take but a few minutes to thaw, or I toast them. Saves me the sad mold face.

TRUE story. When DS when a toddler, he dropped a McDonalds happy meal bag on the truck floor and it ended up under my seat. I somehow missed it for two months. (receipt was still in the bag when I found it.) the mostly eaten hamburger was dried out, but there was no one bit of mold on the bread, and it wasn't even shriveled. The meat was still the same color as was the cheese. It never even smelled up the car! Needless to say there were no more fast food meals for my kid after I found that.

Ok on blizzards and snowstorms . Everybody runs to the store and buys milk , eggs and bread . They plan to live on French toast or what ? The worst blizzard we had it took 2 days to open the roads . I always have 2 days of groceries . Grew up buying once a week . When Dad got paid he paid bills and they bought groceries for the week . Now people go to the store every day it seems . I even noticed at the cabin the same people go to town morning , noon and evening . Not much open in that small town . Are they buying for each meal ? Ok rant over .

about 20 years ago it snowed in Athens. we don't have any machinery to clean the snow. the entire city was totally blocked for 3 days. it seems that most people didn't have food at home. my mother saw on the news that Athens was paralyzed for the 3rd day and called me. she said: are you ok? do you have anything to eat? oh, I guess you have enough food for 3 months. :lau

I have always had plenty of food at home. not sure why but I have always bought things that are on sale and that way I spend less money as well.

once I get goats I'll go shopping once a month. by then I'll have a bigger garden. just need to make my bread. so far a friend of mine has been supplying me with no mold expiring bread. I freeze it before the expire date. (he works in a biscuit and bread factory.)

I forgot to mention that part. It took awhile to learn but works great!! I like taking loaves out of the freezer and baking them to thaw. Makes the whole house smell like i just baked fresh bread 😊

I do my big shopping once a month when SSA and annuity checks come in. I make my own bread and freeze the extra for later. Making sure your fresh baked bread is thoroughly cooled down then wrapped in freezer bags. This will insure your bread tastes like fresh out of the oven when thawed out. I keep my freezers and pantry shelves well stocked. Much of that is home grown and canned from the garden. Extra things like grapes and apples come local orchards. I buy shelf stable milk. I don’t drink it because I’m lactose intolerant but I do use it in cooking / baking. I’m just a wee bit of a prepper.
