What did you do in the garden today?

I managed to catch an elusive game hen that's been loose for months now. Since I culled all the boys in the bachelor pen, I left the gate open. Yesterday evening I noticed her poking around that run so I ran up and slammed the gate shut. Needless to say, she isn't amused...

But in the process of checking her out this evening, I noticed one of the loofah has started to change colors. It was somewhere between yellow and orange so I went ahead and harvested it. It's one of the smaller ones but still a respectable size. I just cleaned it up and sprayed it with bleach to even out the brown spots.

On that note, I'm going to have a TON of loofah seeds. Does anyone want any?

I bet your hen was surprised! 🤣

Are they the white seeded or the black seeded loofah?

Might have enough kale to pull a bunch tomorrow. I think I might try to get my garlic in the ground in the next few days. Threw a big bag of dried leaves I raked into the chicken run and they had a blast. I usually mulch my garlic with leaves, so I might keep adding leaves to the run for a few days, I can rake out the leaves and composting shavings bits and use thst to mulch my garlic instead! Low of 37 the next 10 days, so no frost yet. Picking up a water deicer plate for the chickens tomorrow. Rather get one while they are in stock than try to find one aftet first freeze.

She started flying at the fencing looking for weak spots and squawking like I was trying to murder her. What a drama queen.... 🙄

These are all black seeded loofah. I probably have over 100 seeds just from one loofah and I will end up collecting 2 dozen loofah by the end of the season. So lots of seeds... I'll just feed them to the hens and squirrels if no one wants them. Whatever I don't save for next year anyway....

Got plastic up finally on the above ground beds- carrots and lettuce planted in there.

Pine mulch down on the beds. Raspberries and strawberries still coming but will likely be done by the end of this week-by Thursday we ate highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s for the long term forecast

Well the coon didn't even wait til 10 tonight to return! I sounded the alarm on the critter cam...he just turned and looked and continued to climb the small bachelor coop (that's empty at this tine) then went to the run several times just like at 4am this morning.
I can't find the caribeaner I bought for nothing of course.
I did go out and move all my big babies inside the coop where they aren't quite as tempting sitting at the edge of the run like the sillies keep doin! My youngest are the only roost sleepers! All the others have been playing musical chairs ever since the cochins came along and tried sleeping everywhere but the roost. It took me a week to train them to go inside coop and roost and I've tried for months with the others! Silly chickens

Can you get a live trap?

I have a coon pestering my coops too. I've been leaving the dogs outside overnight. They are a great deterrent but that's only temporary. We will be picking up a live trap soon to try to catch the pesky intruder.

No I had borrowed one back in the summer and she cant get it anymore...and idk what I'd do with him anyways...he's huge! So definitely would find his way back unless I took him out I'm the country and that's just giving someone else my problem.

Yeah i thought I saw striped tail too...he'll keep comin back won't he? We live in city...can't shoot the dadgum thing and never caught notin in the live trap few months back...though they'd pull everything through cracks.
Ugh N I've got 2 hatches in incubators right now and my brooder is down there once they r 2 weeks old. He'll be even more determined.
Can of fishy cat food and a couple of hardboiled eggs in the live trap that he cannot reach in and take out..you'll catch him.
