What did you do in the garden today?

I made a cold frame! (I cleaned the glass between the first and second pic)

I know I haven't posted for a while but things are looking up. I just planted some ryegrass for my goats

and my broccoli is doing well considering the lack of rain. And the rest of my garden is covered in pine straw.

I am now a confirmed no till gardener. I wish y'all happy holidays and long life.

That all looks great @dan26552 and @politicalcenter!

It's been in the 20s and snow showers here in western MD for the last couple days, no accumulation. It was pretty darn nice to walk out and pick fresh lettuce from my coldframe for a sandwich at lunchtime! The condensation under the plastic was frozen, but the lettuce and kale are doing fine. I may pick it all tomorrow and wash it up, if the cold is predicted to continue.

Dan, you're going to love that coldframe, if it's your first one. Mine isn't as nice, just a sheet of plastic on top, until I can find an old window, but it's already paid for itself!

It has dropped into the twenties at night here but the days are still in the fourties and fifties. We have warmup coming soon so I don't think the ryegrass is going to freeze out. We are also expecting more rain. And we need more rain. We went without rain for so long we just about forgot what it looked like.

Thanks. I hope so, I need hinges for the glass but other than that it works pretty well I think, it was between 65 and 80 earlier. And the high out side was only 50. I used a door off an old grocery store freezer.

Nice job Dan. You're gonna love it. The biggest issue with cold frames is that it can overheat! Keep an eye on it, or you'll have your greens cooked before you can bring them in to wash them!

And yet an other one joins the no till ranks!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. Lol, yeah I reckon I won't be using it after April, if that long.

We're headed into a major cold snap next week. It's been down to 7* the last few mornings. Every night the lettuce in the green house frosts up, and by mid day is looking pretty perky again. I notice it is looking a bit more beat up every day, though. Tonight, I went out and covered it up with a sheet and some rip stop material, but it was already frozen solid. I don't know if it will recover tomorrow. The green house may be done until mid Feb. Time will tell! It was great while it lasted. I still have some fresh lettuce in the fridge to enjoy. Not bad for mid Dec. in Maine!!!
