What did you do in the garden today?

It's been an eventful day in the gardens.

In our backyard the grass grows thick and tall, but the weather is beastly hot and humid, so trying to find the best time to mow is a challenge. The grass needs to dry out some from the rain the night before, so today I headed out about 10am to mow some of the backyard before it got too hot. I'd just about finished my first bagful when I felt an incredibly painful burning sensation on my ankle. I looked down and saw a yellow jacket, type of hornet. I must have gotten close to a nest. Blast.

After using baking soda paste to neutralize some of the venom I elevated the limb and used an ice pack to decrease the swelling. I've not been stung in, wow, about 50 years!

I'm thankful that it was only one hornet, and that I didn't have an allergic reaction.

I hobbled out later to check out the melons:

My dh decided to help, and mowed more of the backyard. I went out to move the hose and got attacked by fire ants.

Stop the sting. HIGHLY recommend. Works on wasps, bee stings, jellyfish (not usually a garden issue) and FIREANTS!

I found some rhubarb at a local farm stand so I bought a ton of it. I think I'm going to make the hot rhubarb grilling sauce in the ball canning book. But replace the cherries with cranberries, because that's what I have. I don't think my back is ready for canning so I'll freeze it. Or the Victoria sauce...can't make up my mind, lol.

I've never seen PINK asparagus before.... Purple yes. But never pink... I'm intrigued. 😂

First of the summer squash: top, pale yellow one is “Cube of Butter” . Bright yellow two are yellow zucchini, and three green ones are green zucchini.

I think this is supposed to be the “black” ones…third year trying to grow the black ones and all I get are dark red, so I guess this is it.

First of the pole beans to reach the top of the 10ft trellis. These beans are for drying.

Just because they are adorable.

Apple cider vinegar is the best for yellow jacket stings. I had one get inside my pants leg and sting the crap out of me years ago. ACV works wonders on bee and yellow jacket stings.

Another hot day, almost a heat wave. Humidity is disgusting. I worked for 2 hours this morning before breakfast to beat the heat sort of. The tomato plants in the big garden are looking better already. I weeded the leeks and shallots. Picked some kale. Of course I picked peas first before feeding the chickens. I fertilized the leeks and shallots and the butternut squash. The tomato plants in the upper garden are looking good as are the peppers, eggplant and lima beans. The okra is finally starting to show signs of growth. The pole beans in the corn patch are still doing well. No cutworm damage. I fertilized after removing the plastic cups. My ancho chile plants arrived today. I’m going to plant them in pots so I can bring them inside if the weather gets cold before they’re done. Same with the jalapeño plants when they arrive. And I finally got the flowers I bought a couple of months ago planted in the planters in the front yard. What a day.

Duly noted, thanks.

My first thought as I came inside was baking soda paste, which neutralizes ant bites, and so it seemed to help. Then I took my antihistamine jic I started having an allergic reaction.

The ankle is just sore and swollen now.
