What did you do in the garden today?

To much lol. I got a sunburn while weeding the giant flower beds.

I may have lost 10 pounds of water in the process.

Everything is doing well here. Tomatoes have lots set on and are beautiful!
Hot peppers are doing better this year then ever before! I put them in giant pots since our soil is hard clay.

Watermelon is vining out as is the cantaloupe.

Looking to be a good year.

I just came in from digging around near my fence, the red clay soil is a pain. Back to mixing sand and manure with red clay in the wheel barrow and then shovel it back into the trench i dug out. My white work shirts will never be white again. My goal is to plant peas and sunflowers all around the inside perimeter fence. I have been piling the small rocks i sort out on the outside of the fence to cover the gap where the fence does not quite meet the ground. Good thing i am not depending on my garden to sustain me, because we moved in just over a month ago and this soil has not been used for any gardening. But it keeps me busy and i am hoping it will all be much easier next year.
I tried that sustain yourself from the land once. Thank God for farmers. I'd be dead otherwise. It was a fun project though.

I caught a butterfly pollinating in the garden today

Be careful out there! It is easy to overheat. I try to always find a place in the shade to work. It is bad enough with rashes from poison ivy, i do not need sunburn on top of it! Keep hydrated too. I am happy to hear your garden is doing well. Mine is pretty good considering. I have three raised beds, with another one built and ready to plant as soon as i can dig up the clay soil and amend it with sand and manure. Happy gardening!

Ok, i have to ask, what is a Sikkim cuke?

It's a cuke I've grown every season since trying it. A rather odd cucumber looks more like a football gets quite large and stays flavorful. At the larger size I just cut the seeds out. Google it to find the seed source or if your familiar with rareseeds they have it.

i just planted the two sunflowers i bought at the flea market yesterday. encourage me to find the sunflower seeds and plant them too! I like having some flowers in the veggie garden.

Ok, if you plant your sunflower seeds, I'll plant mine! I keep thinking that it is already to late in the season to plant them. However, if you plant yours, I'll plant mine and we can have a friendly competition to see how they do!!

My yellow squash had 3 female blossoms opened this morning. Odd year. Usually, there is a flush of male blossoms b/fore the female blossoms show up. That plant is loaded with buds. Cukes are not far from blooming as well. Fortex Pole beans are about 2 - 3' tall and climbing their jute. I planted some of the "Yard Long" beans this year. They are just sitting there, but the season is still young. The YL beans on 2 poles that have wood chips around them are definitely greener than the beans on the pole that does not have any chips. Raspberry canes are loaded with blossoms and fruit. Carrots are sizing up.
I planked 4 raspberry canes this year. 2 of them had green on them and seemed to be growing until I planted them :barnie then they turned brown and appear to have died. The other 2 never got any green on them. I am hoping they aren't really dead and next year will show some growth. :fl

Can you post pictures of your raised beds and tell me what the pros and cons are? My husband wants me to switch to raised beds, but I am reluctant.

All I did in the garden today was water it and pick off some Japanese beetles, then I went to Eckert's to pick peaches and then to Forest Park to Fair Saint Louis. Now my feet hurt!

We planted sunflowers last year as well as this year. Last year they did well bloomed and died back. Soon though their seeds sprouted and started growing. Never expecting them to do anything but they grew and blossomed before freeze.
