We got real rain. Yay! It’s been raining for over an hour and a half. It’s a thunderstorm so no going outside. It’s still humid as crap. Ugh!

7:30pm it is cooler than it was, but still feels hot & humid. Feels like 101...yup, sure does. Ugh, where is the rain?

This is getting some sunscald, so I picked it to ripen on the windowsill. The first tomato of the year!

Hey, I dug potatoes too! Three vines were dying so I pulled them up, not expecting much, which was the correct expectation. LOL

I got about 10 little taters, one about the size of an egg, the others ranging in size from a quarter to a quarter inch.

I've read if the plants have flowered, they've at least started making tubers. I dug this particular plant because I pulled a potato out from under it when I was weeding by it a few days ago.

I'll be digging potatoes probably once a week now. The patch is several rows of plants, with a lot of volunteers in between. I have always thrown out potatoes that we didn't eat over the winter. I'd like to throw away less food that I have literally sweated over.

Mine haven't even started flowering yet. The sad looking plants I pulled up were chomped on by bugs of some kind. I probably eat only five pounds or less of potatoes a year so I don't mind sharing with the critters. Definitely not worth spoiling my chemical free garden with insecticides. (BT and Sluggo don't count, do they?)

Potato beetles are a problem. I killed all the beetles I found, looked for and removed the egg masses from the beetles I didn't find, and smoosh any of the larvae hatched from the eggs I didn't find.

Potato beetle larvae can ruin a plant. They're also squishy and gross. I wear gloves when I squish them.
