What did you do in the garden today?

I guess need to get off my duff take a bowl out collect a few gourds for dinner baby back pork ribs smothered in sauce and seasoning oven baked probably potatoes baked with them as we have air conditioning fresh shortcake strawberries and raspberries for desert still need to pick blackberries for the year... back later

Two great minds with the same idea! I put a rack of baby backs in the slow cooker after lunch and can smell them now. I had planned to have them yesterday before the excitement happened. I'm going to smother them in sauce, add two baked potatoes from the garden along with a veggie and voila! Dinner!

@MommaHen2Many Hi! :frow I'd have met them armed, so they got off lightly in my opinion. But I am a crotchety old gal.

Yay! My first chicken sale is a done deal! $75 for 8wk old pullets, one each Cuckoo Maran, BLack Austrolorp, Delaware, Cinnamon Queen. :yesss:

Now just 14 more to sell. :ya

Emptying the fridge on top of two pizzas. So, ham, various cheeses, various homegrown veggies, pepperoni, homemade sweet Italian sausage (rabbit, chicken, pork, beef mix), homemade sauce, and whatever else anyone can find overcrowding my fridge. The rest of them get topped later, par-cooking the extra crusts and freezing for last minute meals.

BBQ and smoked meats coming later this week, if we remain rain free. I hate trying to burn meat in the lightning. It scares me. I'm making more bread this evening. Need to get ahead of the BBQ on a bun situation.

More progress... 20170814_172549.jpg

Not too much today, really. Picked some okra, a few tomatoes. Mostly just checked progress. I have one pretty big delicata squash, and some little baby ones. The vines are dying at the bases of the stems, but somehow still growing outward. My beans seem to be doing pretty good. The golden wax ones are about ready to start picking, but the bush and pole green beans look to be about a week or two behind them. I don't know what's up with the cucumbers... We've had lots of flowers, but I don't see any cukes forming yet. Maybe they take awhile??? Anyone know how long cukes take to form after flowering? I have one volunteer pepper plant that is putting on a few buds. Pretty sure it's a bell pepper, not a hot one.

As squash vines grow out they do lose leaves near the base. If there is a female flower with a baby squash, you can pollinate it by using a soft bristle brush. I like a water color brush. Lightly gather pollen from the male flower and tap the pollen onto the stamen of the female flower.

With cucumbers, the female flowers also have a tiny cucumber at the base of the flower. Each flower must be pollinated for that tiny cuc to grow.

Bees normally do that for us, but sometimes rainy weather keeps the bees from visiting the vines where water accumulates on the big leaves. The bees prefer flowers that rise above the plants....easier to visit without drowning.

Hi All, i've been lurking & reading your garden thread. We have rabbits...too many of them. We are on the "edge" of suburbia with about 6 acres. One day driving home this week, a lady & her teen age daughter were parked on the front of our property. They were :wee:weewandering in & out of the trees, feeding the wild rabbits from a HUGE bag of carrots they bought at the store. :he:he I wanted to tell them that healthy rabbits will just breed better, and I'd be glad to trap all of them and take them to their back yard!!! My garden is fenced with metal fencing, and deer fencing 8' high...just trying to keep my food MINE!! Picked peas, tomatoes, sorrel, and fed the chickens the raspberry stragglers! Froze some blueberries.
:welcome Hi, MommaHen2Many! Have found this to be a fun, friendly, informative thread. Glad to have you aboard! You actually had strangers come to your house with a bag of carrots to feed the wild rabbits in your yard? Must be some hard-core PETA members... LOL.
