What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday I saw a squirrel digging in my tote of hollyhock starts. He had a walnut. Turned the dog out and the chase was on. :gigDW is seeing benefits from vitamin B1. It helps so many things. They say every diabetic should take it. Told my diabetic doctor about it and it seems he did not know about the benefits for diabetics. You would think they would teach it.
I used to rate my walks with our dog by the number of squirrels she got to chase.

I looked at my garden today, starting to make decisions on how it's going to be layed out next year. I have everything I need for installing a drip irrigation system (that I didn't install this year) and want to locate the plants with efficient placement of the drip lines and irrigator heads in mind. I guess I have a few months to figure things out.
I was also contemplating a drip system, settled on the flat soaker hoses. Easier to wind around plants. Bought quick connects and some great 2 way hose spigots with easy shut off. Timers on each set of hoses. Click, flip, turn on timer and do other things until time to switch. Next year will set up soaker in the raised beds, with a length of regular hose in between beds so as not to water pathways.

I was watching something on PBS about Drs not knowing about nutrition and supplements. They claimed the average DR is taught about those for 3 hrs. I guess we need to go to a nutritionist or holistic DR for that advice.
Fortunately I was sent to a pharmacist/ nutrition counselor with the VA clinic. She’s amazing. I’ve had some serious medication interactions in the past and she scrutinizes any new prescription medication the doctors prescribe. She also looks for any potential interactions between my supplements and medications. I’m very lucky to have this.

I put all the tomato, pepper and kale seeds I saved into labeled envelopes and put them in a jar with some silica gel beads to finish drying. Then I opened up the rattlesnake bean pods and sorted out the best looking seeds for planting next year. It won't be enough so I'll pick more from the vines today.

ETA: I got ALL the rattlesnake beans picked and ripped the vines from the trellis. The chickens got the vines, I got the beans. There were quite a few edible pods left, so I'm cooking beans and new potatoes today. Eat 'em while they're fresh. Picked some more tomatoes too. I'm getting tired of tomatoes, finally.

Nothing in the garden today. I really need to water the fall “crops.” Today I finished enclosing the littles chicken hut. It still will need to be winterized when the temperatures drop more but it is much warmer in there. I do need to install a door between their coop and run but the run is very secure so they aren’t confined to their coop. The temperatures next week are really dipping into frosty over nights and cool day time temps. The okra is officially done for the season. Next week I’ll be working on garden and fall clean up.

I picked all the carrots from three little patches. A lot of them were small, fingertip size. I cleaned them all up and threw the little ones into the cooking pot of beans and potatoes, along with an onion and some parsley. It's cooking outside.
