What did you do in the garden today?

I’m impatiently waiting for my onion seeds to ship. I can start a few other things this weekend, but those are a priority.
I'm starting onion (and shallot) seeds three ways this year to find the easiest/best way for me.

1. I planted some in the garden last October. They've germinated and survived the hard freezes. When it warms up I'll dig the seedlings up and replant to the proper spacing.

2. I started seeds indoors a couple weeks ago, and they are growing. But I've tried starting onion seeds indoors before and it was a total failure.

3. I will plant seeds in the garden mid-to-late February, when the dirt's thawed and workable.

I'll grow them out this season and compare how they perform, and choose the best method to use next year. I hope that seeds planted outdoors works out well. That would be one less thing to plant indoors in the early spring.

I sorted through all my garden seeds, threw out half of them that were either too old or I have no interest in growing again.

The next seeds I'll start indoors are the brassicas... kale, collards, bok choi. I need to buy a packet of red cabbage seeds.

A mole has made a lot of mounds in my yard. When they thaw later today I'm going to fill a 5 gallon bucket with the dirt and mix it with potting soil to use for my veggie starts.

Some refer to them as fartichokes
I've never tried them, but I would bet money I'd end up calling them this. Starches in general give me gas.

Oh, if it works, I'd surely try it this fall! :pop

I have always used onion sets to get onions.

I will report back with the results. I think the seeds I planted last fall will work out.

I got a 5 gallon bucket full of clean, crumbly mole hill dirt ready to mix with potting soil when it's time to up-pot my starts. I've never used mole hill dirt like this before but always wanted to give it a try.

I really need to dig up last year's horseradish roots next time the ground thaws out. I've been kind of craving the burn lately.

Edited to add: I went out to dig up a horseradish root but the dirt was frozen solid. It's supposed to be above freezing the next couple days. Maybe it'll thaw out.

Anyone here ever done winter sowing in milk jugs? I'm going to do that this year with some brassicas...

But I'm also thinking about trying a variation. I want to sow some goji berries and huckleberries this year. I've done them both the past 2 years but they always die on me. So this year I'm considering winter sowing seeds for both in cardboard pots and burying to pot in the ground in their forever home, then either covering it with a small cold frame or cloche.

They have a starch called inulin, which doesn't break down in the digestive system, so they're good for diabetics. Your system might easily treat sunchokes differently than digestible starches.
