What did you do in the garden today?

How irresponsible would it be to spend $27 on 4 seed packets, 3 of which only have 10 seeds each
I know this is probably a hypothetical but I’ll poke at it anyway, since I’ve been fantasizing about what I’ll grow next year myself. :D

  • Have you checked other (reputable, reliable) sources to see if you can get the same varieties for a better price?
  • Can you wait for a sale?
  • Once you’ve grown them can you save seeds for yourself so you don’t have to shell out for them twice?

Last year I tried to hold off buying anything until I’d gone to a couple of seed swaps since the way my luck runs I tend to find what I’m looking for right after buying it. If you go that route I do need to warn you that it runs the considerable risk of finding things you weren’t planning on and don’t have space for but that sound like fun to grow.

I guess it depends on what kind they are. Some seeds are pricey.

Yep, poke weed.

The first poke leaves that come out of the ground in the spring are good in cooked greens. My grandma always had wild greens in the early spring. Poke, dandelion, lambsquarters, curly dock and some others I don't remember. None of us got sick or died, but she did change the boiling water once or twice.

I think the greens were her version of a spring tonic.

Edited to add: Grandma lived into her late 90's.
I remember being sent to the yard to pick dandelion by my grandmother, I was a youngster. I did taste it….and that was as far as I got. My youth most likely had something to do with not liking it, never really had the thought and opportunity align to try it again.

I found this toad after mixing the compost

This was one I caught yesterday mourning. Probably the biggest toad I’ve ever seen here
