What did you do in the garden today?

I started onion and shallot seeds early January this year and they grew slowly. When I set them out in the garden the stems were less than 1/8th inch in diameter. I'll soon be ordering the same varieties of seeds for next year's garden and probably start the seeds in December.

Edited to add:
I contacted Baker Creek and was told that the seeds won't be guaranteed to be packaged for the 2026 season until December, so I'll wait until then to order.
When I tried starting onions from seed they never grew beyond thin blades of grass. Not wanting to give up I’d plant them so I could watch them die and the I’d go get starts. Starts would grow, look good, and as mentioned earlier start to rot.:he

Well the material arrived for the new coop/shed and construction has begun.

It’s a bit disgusting that you have such good onion harvest:D I just may need therapy when I think of your success compared to my bad outcomes.:p
I feel ya there. I have gotten 1 onion that was just big enough to need a knife to cut it but most of the onions I get are just tossed in whole.😢

Well, I hope you have better success next year so you can skip the therapy appointments. :lau

Maybe it was that smelly rotten weed tea I used to fertilize the onions. It was the only fertilizer I used, except for the addition of some chicken run compost to the beds last fall.

When I planted all the onions and shallots they were all that small and after a slow start they finally grew to adulthood. LOL

These were planted in the garden March 7th

I had better luck starting the seeds in deep "pots".

Picked another handful of green beans this morning along with some black beans. Those are just about done. After breakfast I picked the ripe peaches and the ones that had fallen off the tree. I sliced and diced a few pounds of them and made a double batch + of peach jam. Right now I’m up to my eyeballs in peaches. TomorrowI’ll work on slicing and freezing more. I’m contemplating
canning some since my freezer is already pretty full.
Today’s peach harvest:

I used the peaches I picked yesterday for the jam. The peaches in the photo are in the refrigerator now.

I love peach stuff!

I failed to mention that when the onion seedlings start getting tall indoors they need to be given a haircut. I chopped mine down to a couple inches tall a few times before they went into the garden.
I tried planting onions, shallots and leeks one year from seed. The leeks and shallots did very well. The onions not so much but apparently onions aren’t good companions for the others. Those leeks were enough to last in my freezer for 2 years. I love that I can grow shallots because they are a bit pricey in the grocery store. The shallots I harvested this year will last well into winter. (Side note: the shallots I planted this year were not seeds, they were sets and worth every penny.)

I didn't know they weren't good companions. The shallots I grew are single-bulb type shallots. I think they're called French shallots. The shallots I see in the store have several cloves per bulb. Different kind I guess.
