What did you do in the garden today?

Kale was starting to look more like swiss cheese than leafy greens, so I sprayed it. I’d been hoping the cooler temps would discourage the bugs but I guess not. 😕 I’m strongly leaning towards not bothering with it again, the pests around here like it too much.
I don’t even know what mines looking like at this point other than horrible

Black walnuts seem to be a popular subject. Interesting tidbit about the black walnut world is that there really is only one major player who deals with them "Hammons" they will buy all you can bring to them, they really do not have any competitors that I am aware of.
Brings up the question, why? You’d think others would be wanting to cash in.

I went to the garden, saw a couple little tiny cabbage worms on my kale. Before I could get my sprayer out we got a huge downpour. Temps dropped into the 50s overnight, and even more rain for two days. Figured my kale would be chewed to nothing by the time I got back down there to spray. Nope, there was nothing on my Kale but one dead small worm. Apparently fall rains and cold temps knock them out, who knew? Hang in there with your kale, could be just keeping them covered til bugs are knocked out will do the trick.

A lot of people put their black walnuts in a grocery sack and run over them with a pickup to crack those darn hard shells.
My MIL would crack them with a hammer, then put out the pieces for the birds. Long ago, she would make walnut pie at Thanksgiving.

We have black walnut trees and walnuts are dropping right now. 25 years ago, I tried harvesting a few. I had to crack them with a hammer, and then go find the nut pick.

Today I pulled out all the bean plants as well as the gourd vines. Then I weeded one of the raised beds. Tomorrow, I'll try to weed another raised bed. We have a week of dry, warm weather coming. I just have to stay motivated to keep pulling weeds and get everything cleaned up.

Sounds like a lot of work lol
