What did you do in the garden today?

New shovels at Lowes in lawn and garden section for $10.

Planted kohlrabi, kale, garlic, lettuce, blackberries, bosenberries, and raspberries yesterday. Dug up and added compost to one bed and several growing pots.

Planting artichokes and beans today. Then looking for flowers to plant.

The lumber came and raised beds are in progress, but winter weather is moving in. Or rain. Or more of that volunteer snow crop lol

some friends came over to check out our project.

I gazed longingly at my garden. Still buried under 2+' of snow. More due this weekend.

Transplanted corn, squash, watermelon, and Brussels. Went to a friends garden and picked chard, peas, and lettuce!

I began removing patches of straw I used to mulch my flowerbeds over winter. I discovered the Monarda I planted last Fall not only survived, but is putting on new growth. Also pounded back into the ground some of the edging that heaved with the frost this winter. Every year, I have to do that, because it heaves out of the ground. I have a bunch of new plants on order from my favorite nursery catalogs.Growing season here is too short for veggies, so I just do flowers.

"Gardeners Supply Company" has a wonderful catalog with quality products and outstanding customer service.

That said, they have this black pound-in, sturdy hard plastic edging that interlocks and comes in three sizes and you can order a separate mallet for pounding, if you wish. They advertise this edging as being resistant to frost heaving, but it heaves every winter, regardless. I always order the tallest size so I can pound it in deeply so it stays put better, and it works well during the Spring, Summer and Fall months. It's inconspicuous because it's black, and by the time I pound it in completely, only about three inches of it sticks up out of the ground. Makes a good border for the beds. But, it STILL heaves with winter frost and I have to go back in the Spring and re-pound it. Sometimes, it comes completely out and I find it laying flat on the ground.

I'm just saying, they shouldn't advertise it as being resistant to frost heave if it really isn't. Aside from that, great product and good company.

Anyone else use the "Gardeners Supply Company" to order their gardening products? What has been your experience?

"Resistant" is usually a word that is thrown in and means absolutely nothing. Kind of like the watch that is water resistant. Is it water proof. NO. Will the manufacturer stand behind their warranty if the watch gets wet and stops working? Of course not.
