What did you do in the garden today?

Quote: I'll keep crushing them and sprinkling the shells in the woods for the chickens then. THEY can do the grinding. lol

THey like the warmth!!! (Me too! hehe) I have been planting 3 year old tomato seeds this year, most germinating. SOme slow to germinate; some varieties not at all.

Enough that I must keep myself from ordering more seed this year. lol

We have two lettuce plants and one little Swiss Chard that have sprouted! We bought one of those plastic trays with all the little trays in it and a clear cover. Keep it moist and outside in the sun during the day and it gets all "green house" in there. I hope the remaining 45 seeds we put down sprout also. I've got a lot of bed space for them already.

How in the world did you get potatoes in? We missed them...too much mud..missed onions also.

Planted potatos and peas in Feb. The peas didn't germinate or sprout. The potatos i wasn't sure but they finally came thru. They are not as heavy as I hoped for. But i am glad to get what i get. Onions sets i put out last month 3 out of 50 survived, i planted garlic in Nov. Most of it survived.
It has been dry here for a week now. I may start watering soon.

Be careful about leaving it out in direct sunlight - it will overheat and cook your plants. I cooked my sprouts real good one year, they were little spaghetti noodles.

If you need to leave them outside for light, prop the top open a little bit for air to circulate.

I've planted 6 year old tomato seeds and had good germination. That, without paying attention to proper storage.

Still harvesting asparagus in our rainy spring. Something is eating my strawberries though. I'm suspicious that I have a little turtle in them. It's either that or wild birds. Peas still haven't bloomed but they are still growing like mad. Potatoes are about four feet tall. I've never seen them get this big before. Peach tree is loaded. I counted 30 peaches on one branch. I keep thinking I should prune them but ... peach jam and all ...
We planted asparagus 3 yrs ago and although it does return each year its never been really hardy. The stalks of the plant either stay very small in diameter or they are very large and taste bitter.
We use manure as fertilizer every other year and last year mixed it with a little calcium from crushed shells. The soil is well drained and pretty rich (not much sand in it). The rest of the vegetables do well except the garlic which is near the asparagus (it comes back each year but bulbs stay small).

Not sure where to go from here...any advice?
