What did you do in the garden today?

There's a couple of horses who live 1/4 mile from my house. I've been eyeing the growing mound of horse poo in their paddock with poop envy. Down side is the fact that I can not shovel poo up into my truck. However, I did see that the owner had a tractor with a bucket loader when I drove past today. I'll be visiting them in the spring!!!

Use a "fork" to pitch a little at a time into the bed. THen pitch it out again. Or if you have 5 gal pails to fill you would like that much better. I 've had a few horses over the years. . . . .

Nope. Even that's more work than this old body is able to take on. My neck and shoulder have been screaming at me for close to 2 weeks now. And that's WITHOUT doing a lot of lifting and flinging poop. Of course the pick axe work I've been doing may be to blame.

Ya... A pick ax would make my body scream too.

THe otherday I was stiff and a bit anxious about what was going on .. . then a few hours later remembered the hour of hard raking the day before. . . .. old body needs a bit more regular work.

If it snows like last winter I willl get that much needed regular work. lol

PS bought 2 heads of garlic to get in. Just haven't had time to get them in the ground. Figure it will need to be SOON, and then cover with a DEEEEEEP multch.

I have been working on my new greenhouse and will supply pictures of the inside tomorrow I hope.

We still have collards, kale, Swiss chard, and carrots coming in.

My greenhouse has brugmansia rooted, some roses, butterfly weed seeds coming up, cardinal flower seed coming up, and assorted other plants coming along. I had been saving aluminum cans for quite a while and I am using them for heat storage.

It isn't the greatest looking thing but it seems to be working. It gets good sun and climbs to about eighty during the day and down to the upper forties at night. If I can borrow my daughters cell phone I will post at least one picture of the inside. It was built with stuff I had around the place so I got by pretty cheap. I just bought plastic and screws. and some PVC fittings.

Sounds cool....let's see them pics of you can.....believe it or not kale is still growing on my garden....ducks are eating the stuff though....it's been down to 8 degrees a couple of times....and spent several days in the teens....stuff keeps growing.

We're expecting a huge winter storm in north Idaho, so tucking in and getting ready. No, I didn't get my garlic in. Ugh. I know it grows great here, and wish I had had time for it. Does it grow indoors? Maybe I should do that, if it will work. I've got a large pot going with rosemary, thyme and oregano. I wonder if it would go in there. If it needs dark, maybe that won't work, cuz I have a grow light on the herbs.

I didn't get any pictures today and my renegade chickens seem to like collards better than kale. I have been feeding the greens to my pigs to cut down the feed bill and they eat it up.

It will get below freezing tonight and this will be a test for my new greenhouse. It should stay above forty and I did put a heat lamp in it.. also a fan. We will see in the morning.

I think plants need darkness as much as light but that is just opinion. Have you tried a timer on the grow lights?

I see no reason that garlic can't be grown indoors.

Bugseye: Is your ground frozen? If not, this is what I'd do. I'd take a shovel, dig a hole in the garden, and just dump those garlic cloves in the hole, then cover them up. You could dig about 4" down, and even spread them out about 4" apart, then cover the whole mess back up. Then... cover it with what ever you can get your hands on for mulch. That will at least get them in the ground. They should be able to set some roots, even at this late date as long as they are mulched.

Hmmm, both good ideas. I think I'll try both. Let's see if I can get into the garden after this snow dump. Just biding my time until this storm passes.
