What did you do in the garden today?

Here's what I did today!

Hopefully some of it survives! I'm always the one who plants every year and kills it all...

Today i built some more garden beds and fillen then with soil and cow poo. Spring id on the way and i started some tomatows and peppers inside

That's great! It is time to plant potatoes here and I haven't even started in my garden. But my greenhouse is packed full. I went out today and got some shelf brackets to make more room.
I have a lot of stuff started.

Any one here have experience with BlackBerries? I've ordered Ouachita, which is advertised as a spined, not rapid spreader, ripening over 5 week period. I'd love to hear from folks zone 6 and above re: your BlackBerry experiences, and varieties, flavor, plant habit. Also ordered Mammoth Red Raspberry.

I have not tried that one . I have found that none of the thornless ones are hardy in zone 5 .Even the ones rated zone 5 . Triple crown had canes die back to snow line last year . This year was mild plus I laid them down and covered them with pieces of plywood . So I should get a crop this year . Kiowa has thorns and huge berries . Dies back most years in zone 5 . Arapaho is a upright thornless and dies back every year in zone 5 . Black satin thornless dies back most years in zone 5 . Darrow hardy in zone 5 but the time I tried them they came virus infected . If you can get virus free stock it is good . Illini hardy is hardy in zone 5 . Nice large berries . Thorns are wicked . New growth hides the berries . Suckers a lot . Hard to contain . A real blood bath from the thorns when picking . I rely on a selection from the wild mostly . Venturing into breeding my own this year . No one is breeding for zone 5 and lower . Took years to learn how to get the seed to grow .Very complicated seed to grow .

Thanks. I'll have to choose a micro climate carefully. I'm at the edge of zone 4/5. So, pushing the limits here. Do well with raspberries, have lots of wild blackberries around. So, may plant this one against the side of the house and mulch super heavy to get it to winter over.

I got 14 yds of atomic red and 15 yds of purple haze carrot seed tape done this weekend, but ran out of flour(up visiting Dad, so just had a little baggy of flour with me) before I could finish all the sugar snax carrots and midnight ruffles (red) lettuce combination seed tape I was working on...only got about 8-9 yds of that done.

Seeing as how the carrots are spaced at 2 in. apart, this is a considerable amount of carrots all neatly packaged and awaiting to be planted. Some in the spring, but most will be planted for winter harvesting. I'll likely be working on seed tapes for various things every time I get a chance until they are all on tapes for the year. This saves me money in less wasted seed, and time and labor that would ordinarily be done on my old knees in the garden as I would thin these rows out. That time is much better spent while I listen to sermons and such, sitting comfortably at the table.

I've got many packets of lettuce that need put into tapes, so I really need to play catch up. I like the idea of doing combination tapes and may work on that a good bit~carrots with lettuce, onions with lettuce, radishes with lettuce, cilantro with carrots, parsley with onions, beets with spinach, etc.
Lots of work to be done, short time to do it, so I need to put it into high gear if I want to have these ready for sowing in March.

LG let me know how your adventure with black berries goes....I have back burnered them for now. Given their difficulties and needing too much of my time. I plan to relish every terrible wild black berry I can find this summer.
