What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday, yes I know it is for today but I couldn't help myself, we planted 8 bags (we use, for the time being, 5 gallon grow bags) of lettuce, 5 bags of okra, 7 bags of kale, 2 bags of spinach, and i am likely forgetting something. Also build, installed, and leveled 2 3x6 raised beds this weekend. We are moving from bags to the raised beds since we now own a house instead of rent an apartment. That is all for the moment, looking forward to getting more don in the new back yard.

Picked up some more pear scion wood from MIL today. One particularly nice water sprout of Bartlett. Now, I'm on the fence re: grafting Seckel or the Bartlett to my seedling pear. The Fedco tree sale is May 9. Trees are just now breaking dormancy. Would it be too late to graft a tree from that sale with the wood I have stored in the fridge???

I grafted last night. Scions had started to sprout already so nothing I could do about that. Will see if any take. Figured nothing ventured nothing gained. I,m betting the dormant scion wood on just budding stock would have a better outcome than what I have done.

Thanks. That method looks like it's a bit more challenging than the standard 45* Z cut. But, I can see how it would be successful. There's a Fedco Tree sale in early May. I may take a trip down there and pick up some more root stock to play around with. I have Bartlett, Friendly, and Seckel scions in my fridge.

It will be what ever they have for left over stock. Perhaps I should look at their site before committing to going down!

Maybe what is on line is not what is at the sale......

Guess I will jump on board! I spend most of my free time in my garden~We finally bought our own tiller, so we have a huge plot this year! Of course we also have 8 people to feed.
Yesterday-We ran out to get a hose so I could water the garden because we ran out of rain barrel water. . .(After all this rain we've had this year it would stop raining once the garden needed it !)

Bought some clearance flowers for what I call Grandma's Garden -It is a shade garden that attracts butterflies and birds. Made for my in-laws that live with us. Planted those and worked in "my" garden which is for food.
Weeded a bit, our potatoes seem to be doing well. We also have corn and peas sprouting! I planted the squash seeds between the corn mounds and added more pea seeds to their spot-
This coming week/weekend I have some seedlings to transplant into the veggie garden. I also need to do some more peppers and tomatoes. Our latest freeze managed to destroy our tomatoes, but at least it is early enough that I can start again.

Our blueberries are looking great! I plan on moving them to 5 gallon buckets soon. We haven't decided where to put them. The best spot is one that gets hit when the county sprays for weeds :/

I saw this and thought it might apply to us... I always go into a panic when I am sitting in the dentist chair- did I get all the chicken poo off of my shoes? They can see my soles

It also takes all I have not to weed the flower beds in public or at restaurants or malls.
I spent 10 minutes weeding at Epcot before my family made me cut it out.

whooot!!!! Second son and first son are grafting the bartlett pears. yeah!!!! Gives oldest a real life opportunity to use his whittling skills. Boy he is far better than I at making clean cuts and perfect matches for the whip graft. Another skill in the learning.

For boy scouts the boys cannot use a knife until they have earned the Tot'n chip......

Welcome FG! It takes one to know one! I also love to buy clearance and sale. I feel like I have been taken advantage of if I pay full price! Can you call the county road commissioner, or who ever is responsible for the weed spray program and have your land put on a do not spray list? That won't guarantee that they won't make a mistake, but it should help.

Oh yeah. Add to that list: Brush teeth. Take all the seed packets out of your jeans pockets so you don't look like you have some horrid disease involving huge tumorous growths around your waist line. For that matter, put on clean jeans, since your go-to pair is all muddy and worn at the knees. As far as weeding public flower displays... yeah, as tempting as that is, even more so is pinching mature flower buds and tucking those seed heads in your pocket. When walking across the parking lot to the restaurant with your family, be polite, and walk with them, instead of running off in the wrong direction to see what those pretty flowers are, and if perhaps they need to be dead headed, or have those burdensome seed pods removed. Everybody knows that when you do that, the plants bloom better! Priced petunia seeds lately? Insane!!!!

I loosened the soil for my sugar snap peas. Have them soaking, and plan to get them in the ground before dark. Planted onion sets, spinach, lettuce. Have an area forked up for beets. Fertilized everything I planted, as well as all of the perennials that live in the garden.
