What did you do in the garden today?

View attachment 1085520 View attachment 1085522 View attachment 1085523 Thanks for the input folks. I'm feeding regular Purina start and grow, mill date less than 2 months ago. Never empty. Plus veggie scraps and shrimp tails. Honestly they are growing and feathering in so fast, I think they just want more room and more to do. I've never had chicks in a brooder longer than a couple of weeks before, so I'm winging it with these at almost 4weeks now. I expanded the square footage of the brooder over a week ago, to about 28 sq ft. Subtract feed/water stations and it's probably closer to 20 sq ft. Just not enough room.

Got them out about 3:00pm. Well got out 17 of them. The 8 most rowdy troublemakers stayed in the coop. They panted a bit, because . . . Summer in Texas! 97 F by the thermometer I put in there, but a bit of a breeze. I put the roofing panels over the cyclone fence and wrapped some wire fence scraps I had on hand around the bottom half with zip ties to keep them in. Worked fine since I knew we'd be out there much of the time. Put the horizontal nipple waterer I made in there. Took the first two about 30 mins to use it, but then it was "chicken see, chicken do." Electrolytes w/vitamins in water. Trough feeder for now. Dog crate and improvised roosts. They seem to like it. Already heard them alert to flying shadow (plane) and squirrel. Put a tarp lapped over west side to protect from sun later.

Worked more on coop. Had already gone to pick up more screws and lumber. Glad the roof panels were here already! Getting real close to putting them on, them siding and doors & windows. Then I can place the run permanently and reinforce it properly. Somewhere in there will be paint and last will be interior fittings. Still got a bulk feeder to make too, but that's just cutting holes in a storage tote. Got the street elbows already.

I'll bring them all in tonight, back to the brooder for lights out, then everybody goes out to the pen tomorrow. I'll see what I can do to make the brooder a happier place, but not spending much time on it now. I just need to get them through the next week without them eating each other! :fl

ETA: the pictures make the run look smaller than it is. It's 8x8 ft, 4 ft high. My ultimate hen count will be 8-10 max. Selling off excess by POL. They will range the yard (approximately 1/2 acre of it) at least part of each day.
Maybe there is competition for space at the feeders. My guineas were pecking at each others toes before they figured out how to use the feeder.

Igor, I super-second the start with just one for the parrots if you want a pet to spend time with you. Remember that they are smart, like children, but more independent because they are grown animals. How much do you wanna bring two four-year-olds with a wild bird-shaped streak into your home at once? And they live forever (30-100 years) and struggle with each rehoming. It's a VERY long-term and serious commitment. Unfortunately, their place as pets in our society don't well-reflect their needs as living things. So just give it lots of serious consideration and research. They are not animals to be placed in cages and be amused at when they say something that sounds human.

@CapricornFarm Maybe there is competition. It looks to me like the lower ranked birds got pecked. Mostly lighter colored ones too. Three of the Delaware and two light red sex link. None of the dark birds (Cuckoo Marian, EE, Australorp) were noticeably pecked, I looked hard. The single Ideal 236 I got seems to be top hen, and most aggressive. She might be first to go elsewhere. And oddly she is white w/black specks. There is a black Australorp that seems to be her backup. I call them the White Witch and the Black Witch. Well, "Witch" will do for now.

Quiet in both the brooder and outside pen. Wish I could leave them out there. But nope. Not safe yet. Oh well.

So i got about 350 gallons of debris off the ground where the bunnies are now. Burned the branches DH cut along the driveway. Picked up lots of sticks. Played fetch with Mini. Oh heck, i still need to wash dishes. Hung up and took down laundry DH washed. Planted the lilac bush out front. Discovered tiny pea pods in the garden! Pulled weeds in the raised beds. Going to vaccinate the kittens tonight. Their mother is in heat again already. She is enough to drive you nuts on a normal day. Throw in hormones and you never know what will happen next. She was trying to get friendly with the dogs:lau

I'm glad somebody got a ton done today!

I got a late start on baking today - too much reading on a certain forum ;) - I have roasted tomato bread rising, light rye to make and let rise, and garlic rosemary to make and rise x2. Then bake em - mostly rolls anD min loaves.

Have to make the zucchini bread mini loaves and roll out the lavender cookies. I'm too old for an all nighter, but that's what's gonna happen I think. :he

MmmMMMmm I bet it smells real good over to your place about now @Taote ! Beans and cornbread sounds good too. Wish I could talk HE into going your direction for a bit. He's had his fill of travel over the past year on business. Maybe come fall.

@CapricornFarm You were busy too! Some years are bust, others boom. And if it's real bad then at least you know it can't get much worse. It'll probably be a great fall for you and next spring too. Floods replenish the soil. So there's that.

Got the chicks back into the brooder just as they were all settled down. Gotta love how easy they are to catch up in the dusk. Mosquitoes ate me up, using the repellent as sauce.

Now shower and bed. Long day. 'Nite!

Couldn't you just do it tomorrow?

Good night, Wink. What do you use for repellent? I got some cedar oil, works fairly well. Hate to use DEET.

Market starts at 7am. I usually get the dough done in the morning and let it rise slowly in the fridge - i lIke to bake it late so it tastes fresh baked. And I can bake the zucchini bread and cookies pretty early too. We had to go into Lexington today (hour each way) and that killed my morning.

The other slow down is I don't trust the thing that let's out propane in my rv oven (too much flow, causing fluttering flame and incomplete burn), so I'm only running the electric table top oven. Doubling my baking time. That's why I've had time to be on the forum tonight, lol...
