We raise Butternut squash every year. 19 on the vines now. They keep well into winter and you can ripen them by putting them on a windowsill or table that gets some amount of sun or bright daylight. Rotate them periodically. They stay rock hard until you cook them.
I never liked butternut. couldn't understand why it was the only kind of squash my BIL ever bought. Totally bland mush, not worth bothering to eat IMO. So, last year, i decided to try growing it to see if I really DID NOT LIKE BN, or perhaps I just didn't like the fake impostors sold at the grocery stores. My experience with home grown BN convinced me that it will be invited to my garden often.
Does anyone know what this stuff is? I hope it is useful for something, there is a lot of it View attachment 1129735 down by the river!
Creeping charlie. My birds like to eat it. I tolerate it. Like the fact that it produces a nice green carpet that is easier to maintain than grass. It also smells awesome when cut. Every year, I envision drying a mess of it to use as an aromatic in the nest boxes. Ever notice how you NEVER see any insect damage on CC??? But, time gets ahead of me, and I rarely get it dried. I hate the stuff b/c of the way it creeps through my garden fence to invade my planting space.
Here's the hen that set 11 eggs during the worst part of heat wave.
This is the second batch this year for her
