What did you do in the garden today?

Sounds like your parrot is a (fun) handful. What a hoot! Have you had him all of his 20 years? What's his name? Is he real friendly, like does he sit on you, like to be petted, things like that?

We used to volunteer for a wild animal rescue center and they had a pair of rescued African Grays. When she laid eggs my wife volunteered us to raise one. We raised him from a hatched egg, fed him by syringe and hand fed him as a baby. His name is Buck because he is the same color (scarlet and gray) as Ohio State Buckeye team colors where we went to school. He is friendly to my wife and I but everyone else better watch their fingers...that is the way of African Grays. When we hear a new sound from him it's always fun to figure out what it is: squeaky faucet knob, dripping sink, someone's laugh, the beep from the dryer cycle being over, E-squad siren from when we lived in town near the fire station and so on. We used to leave a TV on to keep him company since they are very social, but quickly learned that was a mistake as he picked up some pretty sketchy lanquage. He likes to take a shower and when he hears the shower running, he'll climb off his cage and wander right on in with us.

We lost him once for four days in November about 15 years ago. We took him to work with us at our nature shop so we could keep an eye on him, and the customers loved him. One day he timed the door opening and flew through several customers and right out the door and up and away. He must have been planning the great escape for a while! We posted signs all over town and one night got a call from some kids who remembered the sign. He had flown into a high school football game and landed on the field. Someone threw a coat over him and called us. That was a one in a million chance! Needless to say, he now is kept in his cage when doors are being opened.
My secret training weapon with him is to keep a pecan in my pocket and slip it to him when I talk to him every morning. He'll do about anything for a pecan or cashew (actually so will I).

Glad you got the little escape artist back - you must have been so upset when he got away. He sounds like a really cool pet. If we ever don't have cats (doubtful), I would consider getting one.

My sister has had parrots for years. One of her birds once snatched a diamond ear-ring out of my ear, and flew off with it, laughing his head off. He was so proud of his "prize".

I cleaned the coop today, put out some huge piles of DL so they can get nice and wet and finish composting. Added some pine straw, courtesy DPW several towns away.

Stuck some apple tree seedlings, and some garlic into the garden. Finished readying the yard for the first lasting snow storm this weekend.

Sigh, when i came home the only veggies not covered in snow were the cabbages. They have a storm window covering them. I bought 2 shower doors at the restore today. The guy wanted $40 for them. I said well the restore in Danville charges $20 a pair! So he let me have them for that. They wanted $15 for a small desk i wanted to cut wood on in the work shop. I said well... if it was $10 i would buy it. Got some good deals today.

After chatting up the pets this morning, I felt like giving them all treats this afternoon. The parrot did his "funky chicken dance" for me and got 2 pecans in the shell and an ear of corn and the cat woke up just long enough to scarf down his chicken treats. The chickies got most of my attention, and I moistened a bowl of shredded mini wheats and added some blueberries that were on sale at the market this week. I sat out in the yard with them and hand fed the little beggars while we had a conversation.

Since the oak trees have finally dropped their leaves, I blew them all off the yard and collected a huge pile to add to the garden for the girls to mulch in over the winter. There is rumor of snow this weekend but I'll believe it when I see it.

Interesting. They absolutely won't dicker at the Habitat in my area. Nor will they at the Salvation Army. The SA sells canning jars often for MORE than they cost new. I point this out to the people at the counter, and they just shrug their shoulders!
Yeah, i didn't think they would either but the stuff i wanted was not marked. I got a drawer i am going to turn into a nest box for a dollar and a coat hanger thing with space for envelopes or papers for $2. I think maybe the boss was not around.
