What did you do in the garden today?

Welcome to the garden. I'm just a little jealous. We are expecting a snow storm tomorrow into Sunday then followed up with 0 to -2 degree temps. I'm planning on starting some eggs in the incubator next month and getting my starter trays for vegetable plants going around the same time. Not much to do in the garden right now. I even stopped adding scraps to my compost bin since the last time I did everything had frozen into a big lump. Has anyone tried hoop gardens?

What are hoop gardens? I’m picturing the metal frames that you can use to support clear plastic or shade netting over rows. Is a hoop garden different?

I’m in the same boat as you. I’m waiting for the storm to hit, followed by negative temps (-6F on Sunday night). We are expecting 7” approx of snow. Waiting for the stores to start stocking planting trays etc. Want to order chicks...but haven’t decided when I want to get them.

lol... did not know Kiwi grew on vines. Never too old to learn :D .
I have an apartment size garden or small space garden with raised beds. This year I am keeping it simple with tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, kale, swiss chard, broccoli, asparagus and a few peppers... I think that is it. I am past due to trim and steak my toms, they are crawling all over the place. Old Guava wood trellis rotted out and i have not gone up to cut more. Think my soil may be too rich... first time i've ever had that problem lol. Switch some stuff up because this is my first year with chickens. got them in April and they were little and cute. Now they eat... EVERYTHING including my succulents. Ugh.
They do and they are MASSIVE! Our male has grown over 50ft in one growing season. I try to keep him tamed and from growing over and crowding out our smaller females, he was planted about 15 years ago and they’ve only been in the ground for three.

Oh nice :thumbsup
Chickens can get annoying. :lau Ducks as well but they only cause minor damage compared to when the pigs get out. Man those things can tear up an entire garden in no time at all!

Thank you! Glad to be here. Poked my nose in a time or two but did not jump into the group. This is fun. I could talk plants (chickens and horses, cats and dogs) all day! Don't be jealous... you will be frolicking in the garden soon and i will be watching everything scorch, hiding from the heat while sitting and sweating. Yuck. Guess everything is a trade off. I get quiet envious of the space many of the mainland folks have. The workshops, the acreage, the stables... dreamy.

how long do they expect the storm to last? I have not really paid much attention to the weather outside of my own.
I have wrapped wire around two of my boxes. That has been working great so I will make some wired hatches, that way I can access better and weed. (I added lightly composted horse poop and have some grass popping up along with the lettuce)

Can you share photos? I love to see people in other places and what they are doing.
2 years ago me and my husband built ourselves a small home, almost a tiny home on his grandpas land. It is close the beach and also where he works but he will be retiring soon (we hope). All kids are off and running so we thought that we would be doing our water sports and all things us. Instead we purchased some young horses, cats, dogs, chickens and well, the first plan doesn't exist anymore. Can't remember the last time i was in the ocean lol. It's all about feeding and picking up poop now. :hmm

Our track shifted, so instead of blistering windchills and several inches of snow, we're looking at a lot of ice and crazy windchills. Numbers that would make other states roll over under the blanket, but are normal for us. I swear it's because I spent the time wrestling the alpaca herd into their winter coats. Nebraska, you're welcome.

For us storm arrives late tonight. We appear to be in snow band rather than ice or rain...it’s the ice that is the most damaging/problematic, so I’d rather shovel snow over dealing with a heavy ice storm! We will get up to 38mph winds and around 6” snow (up to 11”max, but thinking 6” jives with the various model maps). Then the temps will plunge to negatives after the storm rolls through. Hoping electric stays on!

All those western Ohio trees and overhead lines. I used to live in Columbus area, Dayton, Xenia, Fairborn too.

As inconvenient as ice is. I'd rather it than snow for the livestock. It melts faster and is gone. Snow, turns to slush, turns to ice, turns to mud. Blech.

Few trees around our power lines, thankfully bc that is a major way to get power line issues in winter. We are outside the city, in the country, but not by much. We certainly are not at the ends of the line, so I’m hopeful! Sorry that you’ll be getting the ice portion of the storm!
