That is a good laugh <3 with you, not at you. I found it fun how you worded, and it made me literally laugh out loud. I need better mental chicken boundaries. Have fences that my bantam mixes just hop over. I lovingly turn the hose on to heard them out -the long wet arm of the law works good but lots of guard duty. monster are stealing my unsteaked, laying on the ground toms... guess I deserve that one.

First, I've never grown sweet potatoes, so I can only go on what I've read or been told! While seeking out some seeds to try this year, I was on the Sandhill Preservation site. Apparently, one crop they focus on is sweet potatoes...they sell a few kinds, I think. Out of curiosity I read some of their growing tips for sweet potatoes, and how there needs to be so many "heat units" and how to alter those heat units for success. This was learned when they lived in the panhandle of Northern Idaho (pretty cold), and they currently are in a zone 4b area, growing and selling sweet potatoes. Anyway, if you are interested, go to their site, then "sweet potatoes" drop down menu under "home", then go under "growing information". There is a concise read on sweet potato culture, tips, etc. I found it interesting, in part because I've never grown them, so didn't know much about how to cultivate. Still no plans on my part to plant or grow any sweet potatoes - maybe in the future!

From the limited information I found on the Old Farmer's Almanac site, sweet potatoes need a lot of room to spread out their vines. I don't have the space for that.

Chickens cannot get in my garden EVER
I'm with you. My chickens are omnivores and will savagely attack anything they might consider as a food group, including me at times. I keep food available for them 24/7 so they are quite well fed. I guess it's a little game with them. And, if they discover something white ( like a piece of bread or even a tissue) they have their own version of capture the flag. Too funny to watch.:wee

I do have Deadly Nightshade that grows in my fence line. I always keep pulling out the growth. Pretty much impossible to control totally since I wont be going into neighbors yard pulling up his weeds. In all these years,,,,, none of my pets, including chickens shown any interest in snacking on any of those plant parts. Including those delicious looking berries.
Tomato is in the nightshade family. The leaves are poisonous to chickens. My chickens have wandered thru/near my container grown tomatoes in the past. Never shown any interest in the greens, but would certainly eat the ripe fruit.

I've let my chickens into the dog yard where the neighbors oleanders lean over the wall. No issues there either. I do keep the flock out of that yard for the most part, otherwise the grass would go in a hurry!

I’m the crazy gardener. I’m trying to garden IN my chickens yard.
We built our house 6 years ago. Our forever home.
I started with a patch of desert and a desire to keep chickens and a passion for gardening.
The first year we built boxes.
The second year we built a 6’ fence around the backyard. And had a load of dirt hauled in.
The third year I filled by hand most of the garden boxes I planted my perennial fruits and vegetables.
I battled the plethoras if native weeds. I battled sagebrush for years.
Rocks...let me tell you about rocks!!! :barnie
I had no trees. So now all my trees are either from digging in a friends yard for runners (when they come over they want to see “their” trees) or I’ve let a couple of Elm take root that blew into my yard.
I have this idea to have everything in my garden have a personal story behind it from friends and family or big events in my life. Just me.
Lush and green is not water responsible in the desert. Each year it improves. I do fence my boxes. But it’s a chickens yard and I enjoy every second of it. My most favorite spot on earth :p
Who knows maybe when I’m 80 I’ll have things just right.

Me either! No current plans for sweet potatoes or pumpkins! Melons weren't too bad last year with their vines, but I do know at least one variety was a compact variety. But, I don't have enough space for the big spreading types!
