What did you do in the garden today?

Our weather is always very wet. Living on the lake gives us some 38-42" of rainfall equivalent each year, just shy of rainforest levels. Most of that is snow. The dry years often feel like the easy years. In dry years at least the sun comes out.
I grow vines because my prepared planting space is limited but the yard is huge. I can stick the roots in good soil and let them spiral out into the grass. The chickens have their own 800sqft pen across a dozen birds so they can't get at em.

Skipping vines this year Almanac said our winter would be drier and warmer it sure it is more like summer here 50 no rain fog in the morning then clears

You can have some of my rain. After about a foot of snow crusted over by sleet we had sub zero temps for a couple of days. Then it warmed up and we got over 2 inches of rain. I just might have to buy a boat that's big enough for me, the chickens and my chihuahua. LOL!

Me either! No current plans for sweet potatoes or pumpkins! Melons weren't too bad last year with their vines, but I do know at least one variety was a compact variety. But, I don't have enough space for the big spreading types!

The butternut squash I planted from seed last spring were supposed to be the compact variety. I had 5 plants that were much smaller than the regular ones but they did exceptional. They were only supposed to produce small 1 1/2 to 2 lb squash but the average was 3 lbs with some as heavy as 4 lbs. I had to bring them indoors to let them finish hardening off as my voracious fleet of squirrels kept trying tom taste them. I harvested 23 squash. Here you can see some of them languishing in my sunroom. Good thing the chickens like squash.

I wanted to grow something so badly that in our third year I dug a bed and planted some table queen squash seeds that I saved from our dinner. They grew! And we harvested 7 nice squash.
Then aphids came. I thought aphids? In the desert? Yep.
Then I noticed these 1/4 inch black and red little catapiller type bugs eating the aphids. Low and Behold they turned into Lady Bugs!
Lady Bugs in the Desert!! Yay. I did a little research and found out they will winter in between wooden gaps. Could I be so lucky that they’d take to my double decker boxes?? Yes ma’am (and sirs) they DID!
I’ve had lady bugs every year since. I’m just amazed. Doesn’t take much to make me happy.

Butternut or acorn either one are good we have slugs our worst enemy here put
beer out but gee dogs love beer 5 foot fence ... I guess we learn as we get older to be happy with what is there
