Im looking forward to the great sales on canning supplies! This is when I stock up for next year. I have tons of jars. What I'm after are lids. I should grab some more standard rings as well.

Anyonee else use tattler lids as well as ball lids?

I've never tried the tattler lids. Have read reports that sometimes they don't seal properly and I've even heard about a few cases where even though the jars did seal, when opened, the food inside was moldy! Of course I know that traditional lids also occasionally don't seal properly either, but somehow I feel more secure using them. Just old-fashioned, I guess.

I like your idea about watching for sales on canning supplies - I'm going to keep my eyes open. Could use some more jars, etc. This may sound crazy, but in all the years I've been canning, I've never had a jar lifter. Would like to get one of those for sure!

Hi guys. Had a great time at the festival, back to the real world now.

Had DH freezing romas while I was away, I have 4 big ziplock bags to can one of these days. Also have a half a bag of frozen sun golds for salsa. No clue when its its going to happen, have plans this weekend & next weekend I head to FL for the Bucs/Giants game. Maybe after that life will settle.

Gotta go catch up on this thread, lots of missed stuff!

Tattler lids have a learning curve. It usually has to do with over tightening the rings, which go on less tightly than they do on the metal lids.

The head-space is a little different too.

Mold on food in a sealed container is contamination in the jar/food or improper processing, not the lid.

No one here buys them, but the stores keep stocking them, then come the end of season, they go on clearance and I buy them up, driving from store to store in town.

I usually get them for $5 a box.

Good morning gardeners. Welcome back to the thread @chickmom3941. And welcome back from your vacation @Sueby. We got quite the little thunderstorm/downpour yesterday afternoon. I heard there were tornado warnings in Connecticut. I picked mostly cherry tomatoes this morning. There were a few green beans and 2 small bell peppers. Although there are quite a few small beans developing, I don't expect much more from the stalks as the overnight temperatures were in the 50's and going into the upper 40's for the next several days. So it's nearly just the leeks and butternut squash left. I'm OK with that. I'm planning on getting some painting done in my sunroom today, then will visit an apple orchard to pick up some apples sometime in the next week. I am determined to spray my fruit trees today, they really need it. BTW: @Sueby, your dahlia is beautiful. I'm so jealous! Have a great day everyone.

No I haven't made the cranberry jam yet. I want to make it with apples so it won't resemble regular cranberry sauce. I googled a recipe and found one that looks pretty good. While you were away and having fun, I was canning like crazy. So I'm giving myself a few days off from that. Glad to hear the weather yesterday wasn't too bad for you. I lost the signal on my TV satellite dish for awhile, but that happens occasionally.

Thanks! So happy I can get back on here again. I know what you mean - we still have several smallish squashes & cucumbers, etc. that I doubt will grow much more, since it is starting to cool down around here, as well. The veggies and flowers are definitely starting to wind down already. Summer goes way too fast!
I just made some fresh hummingbird "nectar" to put in the feeders before I head back to work tomorrow. This may be the last time I refill the feeders this year, as usually the hummingbirds leave this area in early-mid Sept. (although I'm still seeing them this morning). I miss them when they're gone.

I watered my garden, cut part of the grass, picked some more cherry tomatoes and a few green beans. Bought more canning jars.

know next year will not put tomato in those bags again they are large enough but think the black fabric was not great for tomato to grow in and have enough tires I can give them better
