Rain has come for the late afternoon and evening. At this point, we have accomplished much of our goal of providing the path of least resistance we want the rain to follow!
We've cut and removed a whole lotta sod! We created a 60+ foot long berm by removing sod then bringing in dirt by the wheelbarrowful and creating the 8" berm. replaced sod, packed it down, filled in the gaps with more dirt, added seed. Another 60 foot berm was created by the extra dirt from the pics above, but this will need to be fully seeded. So we have an approx 120 foot berm.
We cut more sod so we could remove dirt and lowered that area by approx 6" in the middle sloping gently towards the edges. This gave us lots of topsoil. We shallowed out a 60 foot section that is 11 feet wide!! Then another area that is 87 feet long and 5 feet wide. So, we dug a 147 foot channel!!! We actually have about another 25 foot section to do, but will have to wait for tomorrow morning. Luckily, the remaining section needs less dirt removed. Don't worry - we didn't get it backwards, the narrow part feeds into the wider part, which leads to the farmer's field. Again - lots of topsoil gained. It is Ohio, so lots of clay in that topsoil.
We decided more or less where to put the raised beds, and what size the new ones will be. Current raised beds are 16x4. We will make some new 12x4 beds. We also decided on a rectangular large garden bed - plans for it to be 20x30.
