What did you do in the garden today?

Morning gardeners. Nice & chilly here. Still hanging on to my tomatoes, hoping I dont get a frost!

We have a big wheeling/camping trip coming up so getting the rigs ready. Need to get all the fence material off the trailer but he's got to fix the case first to unload because I'm not carrying a pallet of cement bags by hand! I'm guessing the fence isn't going up till Nov! It would be nice to have it finished for the girls before winter but it's not looking likely. Other than that, quiet around here.

Good morning all. A little nippy this morning and soggy. September was a pretty dry stretch, but Mother Nature is making up for that now. It was in the low 40's when I got up this morning but my house is well insulated so I didn't need to turn on the pellet stove. I did load the hopper with pellets yesterday and will likely need to use it tomorrow morning. We are expecting frost so I will be picking any remaining peppers later today. I dried the oregano yesterday and my goodness, how aromatic. I can't use my oven for drying because the lowest temp I can do is 170F and for drying it needs to be set at 100F. That's OK. Although it took what seemed to be forever with the basil, the oregano went pretty fast. I'll be picking the parsley today and dehydrating that after the thyme. I plan on expanding the herb gardens next Spring. Most of the herbs did really well except for the chives and the tarragon just died. I think the soil is too acidic for those two so I will be using a container for the tarragon next year and perhaps for the chives as well. I'm off to get my flu shot soon. Just a reminder - don't forget to get your flu shot. It may not keep you from getting the flu, but it will lessen the severity. Have a great day everyone. And BTW: nice fence @Sueby. That's a nice little project. Good luck! :)

Got my flu shot last week! Don't ever want the flu again!

I brought my grapefruit & lime in in case we get frost. I need to find a place for that fig tree! Pulled up the ugly gladiolas & put a bunch garden decorations & such away. I hope I don't have to cover my dahlias tonight.

I'm marinating 6lbs of meat for beef jerky. Yum.

I got my flu shot thank goodness. I have to wait until the senior hi-dose shot is available. It usually doesn’t come out as early as the regular shots. I think my thyme is dried so I can get the parsley ready. I have 2 rosemary plants but I may only bring one inside now. It isn’t supposed to be a hard frost, at least that’s what I thought I saw in the forecast. I’m outside hanging with my flock right now - chicken TV. Your fig tree should be okay outside @Sueby. Mine is okay with frost but not with super low temperatures. Good luck all with the cooler temps.

I am leaving the fig out Sarah. I gave up on the idea of keeping it going this winter anyway cuz I can't find a good spot for it. :lau
Your fig tree should be good at least until around Halloween. That’s when I bring mine into the garage. If your green tomatoes are turning yellow then you can ripen them on a kitchen counter. I did mine in the DR because it’s darker. If they are really green my most reliable way to ripen them is wrap in newspaper then put in a dark place like a pantry or basement. Just make sure they are protected from uninvited guests. Also, make sure the storage space is cool. Good luck with them. Have fun on your road trip.

I always wait till they start to turn to bring them in, but I have so many super green ones that I want to try to ripen. Do you think in a cardboard box will work? I don't have any newspaper.

I bring the fig in after a few good frosts when all the leaves have fallen off. Then it goes upstairs, we dont dont heat up there. I cover it with a sheet & leave it till spring, except for a couple waterings.
