What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. Planting day is finally here. We're supposed to get rain tomorrow so I'll water lightly when I plant the seedlings. I took the cover off my little hoop garden bed. I've got some weeds going on in there and a very nice short row of carrots. The radishes are looking really good, the endive is doing fine but the lettuce and cabbage is struggling. Before I clean out the weeds I'll give it some more time to see if the parsnips emerge. Next time I do the covered bed I will use hot compost to amp up the temperature. I finished getting the mulch rings around the apple trees. So the front yard is looking good except for the pile of dirt in the driveway. I ordered a border for the flower bed in the front yard but it won't be here until next week. I can still work on planting in there. I have dahlia tubers, zinnias and dianthus ready to go in there. My fig tree is unfurling its leaves slowly, but still looking good. Keep the pictures coming. Love the orchid @TropicalBabies. Have a great day everyone.

Good morning gardeners. We had strong winds and down drafts on Monday and my mesquite tree in the backyard fell over That thing has given us trouble since we bought it so I pulled it out this morning and replaced it with a tall growing shrub. Then transplanted the junipers as well since our temps should go up a little but then drop back to the high 80s next week. I have some rabbit poop and hay to mulch them with after I clean out Walters pen. We had ants in the house, tis the season, so hubs sprayed the outside perimeter last night; we had to spray inside as well in one room, right next to Walts pen of course. I got the area around the xeriscape garden marked off with pavers for now so I can finish a walkway to the veggie garden and got everything watered that needed it. Miraculously the chickens didn't completely destroy the grass in the pool; I put the top back on so it can grow again. Coffee break is over, need to get busy. Have a great day all!

I walked out, bundled up like I was in the middle of a snow storm and looked at all of my plants. Hubby and I were going to go to Walmart to pick up some groceries, but when I checked online, they had already closed. Which was fine with me, I didn't want to go anyway!
Both of they 5 gallon buckets that I planted potatoes in have shoots coming out the top!! Plus I have some in the garden too! Those I will need to make sure I continue to add dirt on top of because I planted them pretty much at surface level.
I also noticed mole/vole tunnels going through my garden. Anyone have any good suggestions as to how to get rid of them?

I had a reallly, REALLY bad voles and Moles and Gophers. Moles, Voles and Gophers are all different. I don’t know much about Voles, but I do know they hardly ever make pop ups or holes out of the ground. Moles Pop up often but do not eat plants or roots, only insects, worms etc. They do cause damage from the holes and pop ups though. It will be a large circle shaped half dome looking mound sticking out of the ground. Gophers are the worst because they chew through chicken wire,(not hardware cloth), and eat the roots and shoots of plants. They make extensive amounts of tunnels and pop ups everywhere. Their pop ups will have several smaller mounds sticking up together in oval shapes in I don’t know how to say it, clusters?

Get a good cat, a black box trap and a Gopher Hawk trap. Don’t bother with the wire ones or the spiked ones. Also don’t use a dog unless you wanted a ruined garden and yard.


I planted sweet potatoes and put up jicama trellis.

I’ve found that slices of raw onions seem to discourage ground hogs.

Some type of thistle I think?? I believe it's what comes from the cheap bird seed. It's EVERYWHERE.

& the violets, that are everywhere too!

The garden is completed except for the San Marzanos that should be here next week. & I have to put mulch down in 1 more bed. Feels good. Now I pray for no more snow, lol.

I cut some butter lettuce, thyme, mint, and parsley for the bunnies. I’m really digging growing their food. They are new additions and I’m obsessed with them. They are so cuddly and sweet.
